I have severe joint pain from medication that I have to take. I find that sitting around isn't good for my joints but gentle moving is great. Swimming and water walking worked for me but my old crossfit/running lifestyle just didn't work. Even walking can be painful. Early this summer I bought an electric pedal assist bike and it has given me 4 months of pure pleasure and many miles (750+) so far. I always feel better after a ride.
This summer my husband and I enjoyed many rides along the trails here and I even commuted to work many days (drove most of the way and then parked and rode in as bikes aren't safe on I-5). Even now that we've entered the PNW rainy season I still find myself riding at least once a week on the weekends to get a quick errand or grocery trip in.
Where I live there are massive hills. Think San Francisco sized hills. Even when my joints were good I rode far less than 100 miles in a year because coming home was NO fun. Now I can get back up the hill to my house. I don't have to walk my bike (pride thing). And, it is just pure fun.
My bike doesn't have a throttle. If I don't pedal it won't go. The motor assists my pedaling. Helps me get up the big hills. I suppose it would also help you to go faster on the flats but I turn it off when I don't need it. Getting a new bike is one of the few things that gives as much pleasure at the age of 53 as it did when I got my first bike at age of 6!
Anyway, I really recommend you look into an Ebike if you live where I do or if you need a boost .

as someone who has ever learned to ride a bike ( I will wait till you stop laughing) I really like your description of the experience and pleasure you get from that exercise. And.. might I add that you found something that gives you joy so getting out and moving doesn't feel like a chore or requires some form of motivation other than pure want. Thanks so much for sharing your story..
