Elliptical session suddenly not counting as steps

As of last week I would have thousands of steps after my early morning elliptical workouts. Now twice this week I have sub one thousand at the end. Did something change in the counting algorithm since last week? And why wouldn't elliptical activity, which is very much step-like not count suddenly?

Same thing is happening to me with the Pixel watch 3. After I updated my steps aren't tracking when logging an elliptical workout

Thank you for letting me know that you're seeing the issue with your Pixel Watch 3. 

This is a known issue after the Pixel Watch March update. As far as I know, the team is aware of the bug and is working on fixing the problem. However, I haven't seen a timeline for the fix.

Many of us are using Treadmill as the activity to track our step until the step tracking issue is fixed for Pixel Watches.

You all wonder why people switch to Apple products. This should have been fixed with an emergency update within days.
