Entering a cycle class?

Is there a way to add a cycle class and have it add steps?

If not, does it just count the heart rate toward a cardio workout?

(I have an Alta HR)

Welcome to the forums!

You need to manually add it. But it will not add steps. Your device should pick up some steps but not a lot

Its not a step based activity

I'm assuming you are talking about a stationary bike -- i.e. a spin class.  As @WendyB said, you would have to add cycling activity manually after the fact.  The record you create should show your HR for the time period, but it won't automatically record a cardio workout because your hand won't be moving.  (You may wind up recording a few steps, but probably not many since your wrist won't be moving).  If you want 'step credit' for the activity, and are willing give you your HR record, just put it in your sock or shoe (that may overestimate the calorie burn, though).

On the other hand, if you are outside cycling, your Alta should be able to detect and record a cycling activity and use your HR to calculate your burn.

Hope that helps.

Hope that answers your question.
