FINALLY! December 2020 Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

FINALLY!!!

It is the last month of the 2020 — FINALLY!  What a year! Of course, it is the year that we shut down the world for a pandemic, had mask wars, and ramped up the drama in US politics, but also … Australia was on fire, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quit the royal family, Kobe Bryant died, the Boy Scouts of America filed for bankruptcy; Tiger King! Murder Hornets! BLM! the west coast of the US was on fire; Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) died; RBG died; hurricane, hurricane, hurricane … and, and, and ...

And yet, it is also a typical December — holiday food is everywhere you look and even with social distancing there are all kinds of social events and changes to daily routines.  So now is the time to refocus a bit.  Recommit to your minimum daily fitness/eating goals and re-establish the baseline you’ll aim to beat next month when you plan out 2021.

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt

This month look for and post pictures at least 3 outdoor holiday displays while out and about (the one below wouldn't count because it is indoors, but post your indoor holiday pics anyway).

I'm waiting right here until Christmas MorningI'm waiting right here until Christmas Morning

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Since ‘seniors’ ( over 65) are encouraged to stay home in Switzerland, I have to be creative to keep busy. So I painted a picture for our Christmas card this year.

@Jotex -- that painting will be great for your Christmas card.  I really like the colors.

I'm down about 1/2 lb for the week, and otherwise on goal for Finally December.  One scavenger hunt pic below and the route of my 6.5 mile unicycle ride today.  Not as far or as long in the saddle as my 11+ mile ride at the beach last week, but I've got HILLS in my neighborhood.  A lot more of a challenge and I get my heartrate up quite a bit more than flat rides. Fitbit credits me with 53 floors for the day so far.

OK, here’s my first week in December. I must say, this challenge is certainly motivating, @Baltoscott !

My steps and sleep. Pretty much on target. The “good” days made up for when my knee was not cooperating.  I’ve also included the scavenger hunt pic.

There’s a Second-Hand Shop 3 doors down from where we live. I walked past it late afternoon to get my car from the VW Garage. Even they are full of good cheer and the Christmas spirit. You can even buy a Swiss cow! 😅

I realized I never updated my IF counter.  Thankfully I have an app that tracks it for me.  I may have to scale back either the amount of fasting time, or the amount of days I try for 16:8; I am finding with the colder weather, delaying food ends up triggering me to eat more.  I'm thinking of two days 16:8 (weekend), and then the rest of the days do a 12:12 split (roughly).

I've noticed since trying to stretch my hips more, my lower back has started aching.  Could be coincidental; it's cold, and my sleeping positions have changed to ones that are less lower-back friendly.

@Jotex  What is a Swiss cow?  It's not a living cow, is it?

Goals for December:   Steps 11,000, floors 20, active hours at least 12 of 14.  Will continue the light weights, stretching, yoga every day.

Off to a good start.

Dec 1--- Steps 13,695

Floors -- under goal at 16

Wts, yogo, stretching 1 of 1

Hmmm, wonder what yogo is? Oh, yeah, Yoga

12/2 steps  11,129    floors  28

12/3 steps  12,392    floors  13

12/4 steps  8,617      floors  15

12/5 steps  13,854    floors  18

12/6 steps  11,861    floors   2

12/7 steps  13,758    floors   7

My step count is getting better now that I'm feeling better, may not get back to my previous levels of over 20k.  My floor level not doing so well, still hesitate to walk up the steep hill every day, sometimes the weather is too cold or wet to make the climb.

@Baltoscott  Another Owl picture for you, the Owl sat on this limb for 10 minutes before dropping down to the porch railing. This was about 12' from our living room window.

I am keeping up on the wts, yoga, stretching every day
