FINALLY! December 2020 Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

FINALLY!!!

It is the last month of the 2020 — FINALLY!  What a year! Of course, it is the year that we shut down the world for a pandemic, had mask wars, and ramped up the drama in US politics, but also … Australia was on fire, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle quit the royal family, Kobe Bryant died, the Boy Scouts of America filed for bankruptcy; Tiger King! Murder Hornets! BLM! the west coast of the US was on fire; Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) died; RBG died; hurricane, hurricane, hurricane … and, and, and ...

And yet, it is also a typical December — holiday food is everywhere you look and even with social distancing there are all kinds of social events and changes to daily routines.  So now is the time to refocus a bit.  Recommit to your minimum daily fitness/eating goals and re-establish the baseline you’ll aim to beat next month when you plan out 2021.

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt

This month look for and post pictures at least 3 outdoor holiday displays while out and about (the one below wouldn't count because it is indoors, but post your indoor holiday pics anyway).

I'm waiting right here until Christmas MorningI'm waiting right here until Christmas Morning

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Haven't walked yet today, supposed to be 47 and partially sunny at lunch so probably one longer walk rather than many shorter ones.  Although I did notice some good Xmas lights in a new neighborhood last night that I may go check out after work.

While it wasn't to the same level I used to do, I did do a quick walk before getting into my office this morning (yay for in-office days).  I have to walk over to HR later, which will give me a few more steps.  I'll take every one of those steps!  I figured to hit my step goal, I need about 11,800 steps every day for the rest of this month.  Here's to hoping I can get those!

12/22 - 12128 - had a good walk at lunch and then went in to the office which right now is extra steps because the mailroom doesn't deliver during Covid and the building is across campus and all buildings are one way traffic so you have to make loops to get to it.  Just going from my car to the mailroom, to my office and back to my car is probably a mile or so even though the buildings are maybe 50 yards apart.

Did not sleep well last night.  It will be difficult to choose walk over nap at lunch today.

Did pick walk over nap, but only because I thought I would have time for both, but work was insanely busy for the day before the holidays.  Went to bed early, woke up at 3 again. Eating too much sugar to compensate for sleep.

Lots to do today, getting in the walk will be a challenge!

This weather is just not helpful for me!  Now we are expecting 3 inches of rain, that will freeze tonight.  Can't catch a break here.  Here's to hoping tomorrow I can get to the park for some steps and that I'm not chopping ice off the driveway.  😰

Back to the beginning with my weight, 66.8 kg, which is actually where I was beginning of November. On the other hand, if Americans typically gain weight over Thanksgiving and Christmas, then basically ... it’s the equivalent of losing weight if I stay the same, isn’t it? 😂

Merry Christmas

12/24 - 12886  - it was beautiful out.

Definitely feeling the effects of prednisone withdrawal - ahh well it was nice living pain free for a week. I think i am having some reactive pain and it should hopefully calm back down.

Pouring out right now.  I hope I can get a break in the sog in a little bit to go for a walk.  Doing the Xmas roast in the sous-vide so plenty of hands off time.   But it is running in rivers in the streets and I don't like wet feet.

@Jotex  - absolutely not gaining in December is losing!

12/25 6710 -  yesterday I had what I expect were part of the steroid withdrawal,  symptoms that were not so concerning to rush to the ER, but weird and concerning enough that I didn't feel comfortable going for a walk by myself.   Seems more normal today so at some point I shall be seeking a rainy walk.  I got a new raincoat for Xmas but it was tiny so back it goes.  OTOH, that may be a record number of steps for just hanging about the house on Xmas.  I made a dinner, but it was mostly prepped already the night before.  No idea how I managed 6000 steps without noticing.
