FYI July -- Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

FYI July — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

Just a little For Your Information that we are halfway through 2019, and it is time to sign up for another monthly challenge. And a reminder that if you happen to see this for the first time mid-month, jump on in; there is no need to wait for another challenge to start next month.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

The theme this month is a parade or other outside event or a famous landmark.  In the US there should be plenty of material on or around July 4.  Elsewhere it might be a market or someplace near you that regular shows up in the paper or on television.

Outdoor JamsOutdoor JamsFamous Landmark :-)Famous Landmark 🙂

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Saw my physical therapist for shoulder work today and she scolded me for using a weighted bar for the prone overhead stretches she assigned last time. So I am using a hollow plastic tube now.

I have never had PT for anything before and I imagined it was going to be torture based on what my wife has gone through for some hip and foot issues.  But in my case the therapist is concerned I push too hard.  She has made a note in her records to ask me lots of questions in case I 'forget' to volunteer information.  I know she has broader experience, more relevant education, and understands this stuff better than I do, but it's hard for me not to test the limits.  At 58 I am still learning how to take direction.

When I had a PT a few years ago I did something I should not have and she was mad. Said I really could of set my self back. So I listened

I had to change my steps. I did not make them today.

My DR told me to wear compression shorts for my leg problem. It was not wise. Really hurt my leg.

So I guess DRs are not always right.

My husband was shocked he even suggested it.

Goals:  20k+ steps per day, 25 floors or more. No point in logging miles since steps are up. I am still doing the free weights and yoga about 3x a week.  Still hiking with Jake about an hour per day.

7/10  steps 30,058, floors 21

7/11 steps 31,314, floors 42

7/12 steps 28,732, floors 39

7/13 steps 30,330, floors 13

steps 13/31, floors 9/31

Found out why my new tracker wouldn't display day of the month.  After 3 days it quit syncing. Contacted fitbit "customer service". They told me it was because of my new Samsung phone! Said it hadn't been "tested" with fitbit so they didn't support it. Perhaps I should buy a different phone on their approved phone list. I reminded them it worked fine for 3 days, then failed. Still my phone problem!??  Then my Fitbit app said it needed an update, so I started that, the app then said it couldn't find my tracker!  Grrrrr. Another call to "customer service" - "it's your phone,we can't help you".

I restarted my download (for the 9th time), put the tracker next to it, and went for a walk with Char and Jake.

When we returned from our walk I opened my fitbit app to find it had updated, then it synced! Now my watch displayed the day of the month.  Not happy with "customer service".

The FitBit Charge3 is known for update/sync issues. We have 4 between my
immediate family members.

Quick fix for won't sync:
Put FitBit on charger, then restart your phone. Sometimes you can get away
with turning your Bluetooth off and back on sometimes not.

Quick fix for updates: place FitBit on charger, phone on wifi if possible,
start update on phone. This works for app updates and firmware updates.

Common issue - screen won't come on. Put FitBit on charger, hold static
button on charger for 3-5 seconds till smiley face appears on screen. This
is tricky, my finger is small enough but too cold or too little blood to
engage button the whole time. My husband's finger is too big to fit in hole
on charger, but he can do it sometimes. My 24 yr old son has no problem
doing it.

You probably noticed every fix requires putting the FitBit on the charger.
It won't work if it's not on a charger.

Hope this helps you!

I have also had ‘issues’ with my Charge 3 the past week or so. Tried to update many times. Oh, what a to-do!!! Deleting it from my App. Forgetting this device in Bluetooth (best results). Turning bluetooth off and on. Having it on the charger was necessary. It works now, but still says there is an Update, which I am choosing to ignore because I think the message is a bug. Gosh, we have more to do than keeping it plugged in, downloading the update in our device, and going through all the rigamarole!!! BUT ... I am now absolutely spoiled by getting notifications on my Charge 3, I want those to work, as well as counting steps, tracking heartbeats, date and. time! May we all have LUCK keeping them working! Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

@BMANinthe UP

Thanks for all the tricks! I didn't have my C3 on the charger when it
finally worked, but it had just been given a full charge. Perhaps that's
what made it decide to work, or perhaps my threat to throw it out and go
back to my C2.

I will print off your suggestions "just in case".

If it continues it may be my last fitbit. Thanks again! Ben

@Jotex

Gosh, more bad news about the C3. I am addicted to the easy to read screen
when outside. Also the waterproof feature is great! We met our
kids/grandkids at a local federal park on the river last week. I forgot to
remove the C3 as I jumped into the water then paddled around on an inner
tube. Got out and panicked over leaving it on till it dawned on me that
it's supposed to be good to 50'.

Will keep everyone posted on any more problems with the C3.

Unless it cools off a bit I may have to skip the 50 mile bike ride this month.  Heat, humidity, thunderstorms, Yikes. @SteppingBooks — I think I’ve developed allergies this summer too.  So much pollen in the air, one of my eyes is so puffy it looks and feels like I’ve been up for five days straight!

@benvegi  Glad you got your CH3 going again.  I had the “screen won’t come on” problem @BMANintheUP mentioned a couple of times and got it working again by changing the clock face in settings on the phone and then syncing it again.  Other than that, it has been pretty dependable for me. Definitely like the improved water resistance over the CH2.
