Did you mean:

Fit it registering steps when I sleep or when I sit?

Woke up this morning to read that I had walked 150 steps in my sleep?
I also notice that when I'm at my desk working - sitting in a chair - that the device still adds steps?

This makes me question the reliability of the step counter.

@MerlinsMom - I wouldn’t be too concerned.

Fitbit will record some steps from wrist movement that aren’t really walking/running (movement is movement after all), but for most folks it doesn’t amount to that much in comparison to real steps and whatever “extra” it represents tends to be fairly constant so that if your step count is increasing over time it is probably because you really are moving more, and if it is decreasing, your probably are not moving more.  A few hundred steps/day is probably not a very significant portion of your true daily total.

You can make it somewhat less sensitive if you want by wearing it on your non-dominant hand and telling Fitbit that it is on your dominant hand.  You can make changes in your settings.  To me it is not worth the trouble. More important are trends up and down over a course of days and weeks.

@MerlinsMom hey there- yep you will sometimes get extra steps from not step related activity like driving, sewing, dish washing. For me its clapping and salt shaking on popcorn. I know that through out the day, there are steps that are missed by the tracker so for me its a way of evening things out. If you want the most accurate steps, then a clip on tracker would be your best bet.
