I don't mean to call anybody out or question somebody's integrity but there are fitbit users who average better than 75K steps a day over the course of a week. Assuming they get eight hours of sleep, that means they're walking almost 40 minutes each hour every hour of the day unless they're asleep. Every day for a week.
It is possible that they're running or training for a marathon or walking really fast or are really really into this walking thing but it seems like it is too much. Any way you do the math, it is an incredible amount of walking and it is sustained over the entire week.
What's the most anyone has ever walked in a day? How about in a week?
I wonder what it would be like if I got up at five am and walked all day until midnight? Doing the math, it would theoretically be possible to break 100k but I don't think I could get anywhere near that. And 80k a day for a week seems too much too.
What do you think?

JohnnyRow: Please allow me to explain. First, I would demand to see 2 consecutive weekly progress reports, if that didn't discourage the lies then ignore them. Stop the non-critical support of wildly inane numbers. If in a competition or group with them ignore them and freeze them out of all comments. Glad to see another fan of The Moody Blues!

From what I can see, none of you talking here have the chops to do so. But yes, verification is required or claims should be ignored. Strava with GPS miles and tracks or it didn't happen. Two weeks of weekly Fitbit reports/results are easily faked and mean little more than the step totals, which themselves really mean nothing, due their wide variability, even without cheating.

@Corney The problem with the non critical approval of such numbers is twofold. 1. People have no idea of the time/effort involved in such nonsensical claims (14 straight days AVERAGING over 100K steps/day..."but family comes first!'.... yeah, right, FitandLit.....). 2. So far, the claimants I've seen tend to be female and attractive* (or, at least their AVATARS are). So, guys will just pour on the praise in order to get a positive response ("Maybe if I say something nice, she'll like me!")
*"Goddess K" could be a supermodel, and you know...I just don't think supermodels go walking for hours and hours and hours........

Haha....'FitandLit's" latest claim is in....over 800,000 steps/week, best day of 131,000. People are actually defending her claim, which prompted me to ask "When do you think her numbers will be high enough for even YOU to question them?".
I haven't gotten an answer to that one so far.

individuals that claim such inane totals week after week.
Is it possible however that they somehow manage to burn fewer calories and do less distance by altering the gait in order to attain the steps needed to win such a challenge? As long as there is a foot going in front the other (x 40000 for each foot), the report is just a rough estimation of the effort involved.

Sorry, but that math still doesn't add up to me.
A few days ago, I did 30 miles of walking as part of training for an upcoming ultramarathon. Moving at a brisk pace for over nine hours, I averaged nearly 7000 steps per hour.
Unlike a mail delivery person, I was not slowed down by:
*Having to carry several pounds of mail in a bulky satchel
*Stopping at intersections waiting for traffic to clear
*Opening and closing gates
*Knocking on doors
*Sorting through mail on the fly
*Putting mail in the boxes and taking other letters out
*Conversing with patrons along the way
*Avoiding dogs
A fit mailman (or woman) would being doing great to AVERAGE 5000 steps an hour with everything else that goes along with the profession. So if they are moving for eight hours (which most don't), that would still only be 40k steps. That means they would have to go home and run another 20 miles (or 30+ kilometers) each day to get to 80k.

MihaiMVP: if you try taking smaller steps it is difficult to average
100-120 steps per minute, so 80K steps would take much longer to accomplish
and burn fewer calories.

I just received a friend request from someone that averages 461,570 steps a day!!! How’s that possible?

@WuaKeeN Most likely, it's a FitBit error. The "daily" total that they show is really a "weekly" number. The amount is not all that likely, even as a weekly number.

I just started removing friends who have insane averages/totals. I work from home and my desk is a treadmill... when possible I run into town and back (about 8 miles). So I am LITERALLY on a treadmill doing 3-4MPH for 8+ hours a day and I will hit 50-70k a day. I did have ONE 100k day in all the years I had a Fitbit and it was a solid day on the treadmill. On weekends when I am NOT working, I sometimes struggle to make my goal of 20k steps. The Fitbit tend to top out at 6700 calories per day.
