How difficult is it to lose weight at 40 and older?

Back in 2011 I lost 60lbs and was in great shape. 2012 was a hell of a year and I couldn't even maintain. Since then I've gained 30lbs and I want to lose it by the end of this year. But I turn 40 in June and EVERYONE keeps telling me it's impossible to lose weight at 40 and older.

So should I just be in maintanence mode and strive not to gain? Or can I get back into shape?

I lost 191/2 kilos before I started using my fitbit and since Nov I have lost nearly 2 more.  I am 72 and walk every day.  I follow the 5:2 plan and now follow my Ionic by recording everything I eat, stay within my caloric intake.  Friday night is scrabble night when I let myself go, few beers, some wine, chocolate, nuts etc...then walk and extra few steps on Saturday.  I am targetting 6 more kilos by the end of August.

Losing weight after 40 is not impossible.  My story.  10 years ago I was 60 years old and weighed 210 pounds.  Changed my eating habits (not diet). Today I weigh 175.  My goal was to lose a minimum of 5lbs per year, until I got to my BMI. Did it in 4.5 years.  For me it was all about how much I ate. Example of change = year 1 - avoid 2nd helpings. this became a new habit.  I still eat all the things I used to eat, just less of it.  If one person can do it, so can others.

There's no substitute for common sense, is there?
