Hey, I'm a teenager, and I would love to lose some weight. So, me and my mother are going on a fitness challenge through June 19th and July 19th. I'm also going vegeterian or even vegan through that time period, and I would love to know how to get 50,000 steps in a single day. I'm getting a new iPhone if I win this competition. Help! 🙂

Well you will need to drink tons of water and you will need to start doing 10,000 steps a day then increase it the next day to 20,000 and so on. It's not going to be easy for you to get 50,000 in a day right away. For some it's easier than others.

50,000 steps is roughly 24 miles! The most I've ever done is 12 miles in one day. Which was 25,000 steps...
Good luck!!!

I did 65,000 steps one day. It just about killed me! Believe me, it is NOT the way to lose weight. I was in bed for about two months afterwards to recover!!! 10,000 steps a day is an excellent amount that is both achievable, will not kill you or cause your body damage, and you can keep up. You are practically guaranteed to lose weight on 10,000 a day as well as long as you are not stuffing your face with junkfood as well.

I do 2 runs a day morning and evening between 10 and 15 miles plus my daily steps through the day,I do this every other day but don't reach 50,000 everyday probably 2 to 3 times a week.

I'm impressed; I've only done two 10+ mile runs on a single day once in my life (and I was 57 years old at the time). That was the beginning of my lone 100+ mile week; I know a number of Ultra Runners who clock 100 mile weeks on a semi regular basis. Keep us posted on your upcoming 24 hour event.

Roughly how many steps are you logging on average right now? Given your challenge starts tomorrow, are you wanting/planning on hitting 50,000 steps daily, or are you wanting to work up to that threshold at least once during the challenge?
Remember to keep us posted on your progress. 🙂

While I agree with you that going from sedentary to 50,000 steps in a day is a really bad idea, I disagree with your statement about 10,000 steps.
10,000 steps certainly doesn't guarantee you will lose weight. In fact, I don't consider 10,000 a worthy target for someone trying to get fit. It's just the minimum recommended activity level.
I have a sedentary desk job and I get to 10,000 steps just with normal activity and a 38 minute walk. Based on my size, a 38 minute walk burns an additional 122 calories, so it isn't going to help much with weight loss. While this level of increase might be an increase over baseline for a lot of people, it's not that "active" of a lifestyle.

@BlueBlingThing, I have to agree with @FitBeforeFifty, if I only averaged 10,000 steps in a day, I'd probably gain quite a bit of weight every week.

Have you picked out your walking route yet? Why not open Google maps and use your home as a starting place. Then pick the pedestrian figure and choose a destination. It'll send you a street route, a distance, and an estimated time. If you pick one 12 miles from home, you'll have a deeper sense of what your ultimate goal looks like. Bring along a bottle of water, when you go. Try to pick different routes. Each time, go further. Schedule more time to do this, every time you adventure forth. Remember, the iPhone awaits you. Good luck.

Well I guess we're all different. I always lose when I do 10,000 steps on average.

If I get the balance of food and steps (I aim to reach 10k a day) right then I can lose a kg a week and it feels effortless - which is the way I like it! I also use MFP which helps me balance everything so I lose the weight.

You lose a kilogram per week on only 10,000 steps per day? Are you on a starvation diet?

Good grief no! I just follow the recommendations on MFP which just involves keeping within the calorie count. I'm pretty much eating all day, but it's all healthy.

Those calculations are based on 3.5 mph. But it is based on NET METs ... in other words, that's 122 calories above what I would have been burning if I were just sedentary.

Consider yourself lucky; many (most?) folks I know will not be able to lose weight eating a normal health diet when walking only 10,000 calories per day.

Yesterday I did a personal challenge. Could I ride my bike, walk and do weight light training.
10 mile Bike Ride, 49:23, 12.3 Mph, average heart rate 117, calories burned 397
3 mile walk, 47:32, 15:42 pace, 3.82 mph, (1 mile was faster than 4 mph, 14:26. My fastest time ever), average heart rate 128, calories burned 555.
41 minutes lifting weights and using my bench. average heart rate 106, calories burned 229.
According to my Surge, I burned the most calories walking, and the least doing weight training. There was driving, and rest between the three exercise sessions yesterday. I started at 5:30, and I finished at 10:30.
While I average closer to 15,000 most days right now (when I don't ride my bike), I usually do lose a pound or two a week. But a lot of exercise (for me) and a strict diet of now 2000-2100 calories a day drive the weight loss.
