How do you get those extra steps in?

I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.

Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.

My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!

What do you do to get your extra steps in?

Alex, I had no idea. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. If you posted about the accident earlier I missed the post, I certainly would have checked on you to see how you were doing. Even though you were involved in an accident you are up to 7K steps already, I know plenty of people that are not even trying to reach this goal and they are just fine physically. So our hats are off to you, this is proof positive that you are a real trooper! Keep Stepping my friend. I will check on you more often. You are amazing.

Oh thank you so much, it has been a horrible few days but I am getting back to it.  I usually average around 15K steps a day, and run every day so I feel like I am doing nothing, but I guess I am doing pretty well considering!  I have awful bruises and my legs were so swollen - they have calmed down now but they really took the brunt of it.  It could have been worse - they could be broken so I am happy with it but it is frustrating.  Thanks for the support, much appreciated!  Take care xx

Alex you take care. Better to take your time healing than struggle later because you overdid it. I know it must be killing you but think long term health. Zee thank you so much for all your kind encouragement. This is a great community. Keep moving folks.

Feel better Alex, we are thankful that the accident was not even close to what it could have been. I am happy that we now know about it now so that we can keep and eye on you and your progress and especially your healing. Again, the fact that you are up to 7K per day is remarkable. I started walking seriously in October 2012. Got Fitbit late November last year and really upped the ante. Love challenging myself. In January I added 100 flights of stairs to my daily step goal and have achieved it. I can honestly say that nothing I have done in the past year and a half has firmed my entire body like the past two months of 100 flights a day.

Ali what an awesome and informative post. You shared this information with me earlier, I am so happy that you posted it here as well, this will help a lot of people. Because of you I've increased my flights, I averaged 22 flights per day last week. Now, I've got to really up the ante. Thanks Ali, Keep Stepping and Climbing.

That's the way to do it Zee.  Just keep adding flights as it gets easier to do.

Love that Ali! Will certainly get working on that once I am back to rights!  My current target is 30 flights a day - will up that for sure.

Awesome Alex, the stairs tend to take a toll on my knees so I find that hills are easier for me.

I like outside hills as well, weather dependent. But happy for my ridiculous route through my house as well when the weather ain't great. I get 10,000 steps with the 100 flights.

Ali after your post this morning, guess how many floors I climbed today? 60!!!!! I am so proud and would not have even attempted it had it not been for you. I received my helicopter badge because I've climbed 500 floors. I am just so excited. My friends in the community continue to push me to reach higher goals. You guys ROCK!!!! Keep Stepping and Keep Climbing.

Woohoo nice work Zee! Only managed 6 yesterday - I was at work most of the day and the building is all one floor so nothing there.  Did the 6 at home!  Just back from a 1 mile walk - my legs are improving and although still painful, nowhere near as bad as they were.  I am getting back to rights slowly.  Working at home today and tomorrow to reduce the effort a bit, as being at work was shattering me.

Good job Alex, I sent you a message yesterday to check on you and to see how you were doing. I am sure that being back at work this early would be very difficult. Be careful not to try and do too much too soon. We know you are a survivor but allow your body to catch up with your will. You're a true trooper. Keep Climbing, Keep Stepping, and feel better!
