How do you get those extra steps in?

I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.

Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.

My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!

What do you do to get your extra steps in?

I have lost my fitbit again--that clip on had fell off again--next time I'm going to get the wristband....To make steps without the Fitbit is no fun....Tonight is the Step Class--it will be tough without my Fitbit!

I still cannot believe that I lost it again....

I went  and bought extra velcro so it fit around my ankle comfortably.I  found if its on my wrist if I'm not moving my arms it doesn't calculate my steps.I have a Fitbit One.I also turn it so the opening is against my ankle(so inside out) this way it can't fall out.

The model One is calibrated to be worn on the torso, not wrist or ankle.  In my experience (I also use the One), wearing it on the ankle should give you accurate step counts but will greatly exagerate the calories and Very Active Minutes.  This is because part of the measurent is the force of the impact on each step, and when worn on the ankle it senses a much harder impact as if you were coming down hard such as when running or jumping rope.

If you don't care about the calorie or VAM inflation, then it should be fine on the ankle.  But it is designed for use on the torso.  Guys tend to clip to a waistband (often facing in) or to/in a pocket, my wife and many gals on the forum clip to their bra.  What some forum members call BFC (bra, front and center).

This differs from model designed and calibrated for wearing on the wrist.  For most accurate results, the recommendation is to wear at its design point.

You are the best to take your 2 teen daughters to Zumba. It is good for lifting mood and getting healthy. The girls are lucky to have you. Also big congrats on your weight loss and sounds like you are almost to your healthy weight. I bet all your medical blood work is better too. I love Zumba and most forms of dance.

Hello all!

Since I work in the food industry, Arby's to be exact, I am ALWAYS moving. I can easily hit my 10,000 step goal, but I see how much more I can get. I go to the gym pretty regularly and easily burn through an additional 2,000 to 3,000 steps there with the treadmill, elliptical and the dance class I do twice a week. I have also been known to jog up and down the hallway at my house.

I'm in grad school, so I spend (spent) a lot of time sitting on my ass studying for exams and practicals.  Then I got a Fitbit.  Now, if my schoolwork doesn't require writing, but just simple readings, I'll throw my laptop on the treadmill and just walk for an hour or two while I read through the material.  Great way to get in some "exercise" while doing what I would be doing anyway.

I also have a bunch of shows I record on DVR, that are able to be viewed online as well.  If it's the weekend, and I have some free time, and I want to watch a show, and it happens to be available online, I'll also toss the laptop on the treadmill and just watch the show while I walk.

I walk while on the phone often. If I'm on the land line I can walk in the yard and up and down the downhill driveway. Just did that this evening and then came inside and upstairs until my 10k buzzer went off. I often can talk my sister into walking with me which see really needs to do.

I take dance classes also. This winter I may look into a gym membership or get a used treadmill if it is a rainy winter. The drought this year left many outdoor walking days but I hope it pours in all the drought struck regions soon.

Happy stepping, dancing, jogging all.

I actually walk - power walk - jog - run and now I have been rebounding (mini trampolining) - the Fitbit One counts the bouncing on the mini trampoline with ease - love it !  I can actually get 5,000 steps in 30 minutes while jogging on the rebounder 🙂

I am quite active during the week as at the beginning of the week i have classes. We tend to use the stairs to walk around (we are not allowed to use the lifts) haha

Plus because the course i am studying its a fitness course we do alot of practical!

The rest of the week i work in a office you think i probably sit most of the day which is true sometimes but i do walk around a bit because our office is quite big lol Plus if i need to see someone i just walk over to see and talk to them 😄

Plus at lunch i walk to get my lunch.

So theres lots of ways to get active in between your training days off course! 😄

I'm fortunate not to work outside the home .I foster children,so my time is
when they are at school,on Saturday we hike ,play disc golf or racket ball
but Sunday is my cleaning day so I never get my steps in that day.Working
in the office ,not knowing what you actually do makes it hard to give
advice. If its not a fancy dress play and is casual.Use your 15 min breaks
to go up n down a few flights of stairs. If your in a save neighborhood try
walking around 8pm even if its just around your own block a few times, walk
the dog if you have one.

I'm going to start walking a bit in the morning too! I run around the office a lot so I can log in 3-5k easily there even though I am sitting in a desk in front of a computer 75% of the time.

I've started to walking after work again. Sometimes instead of taking the train I would walk home. Sometimes I'll walk in the park, along the beach, in a developing area with nice view--anywhere scenic and if less stop signs or lights even better. Hits my stride.

I work from home a lot of the time, so when I've got a day like that, I set silent alarms on my fitbit at half hour intervals. When it buzzes, I leave my study (which is upstairs), go downstairs and do something like load the washing machine, empty bins, tidy papers - anything, just to move around for a few minutes. Then I go back upstairs, and I've logged a few hundred steps and a flight of stairs.
