I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

I've had a Fitbit for about a year now. A few months after the Fitbit craze wore off a few months into wearing it, I started slacking off and not really paying attention to how many steps/active minutes I got per day. For the past few months, though, I've been pretty good about getting at least my 10,000 (but there is a day or so that I get only 5,000 steps per day). I'm not overweight by any means, but I realize just because you're not overweight, doesn't mean you are healthy. I recruited my mom into the Fitbit community because she is trying to lose weight and recently purchased an Alta for her for Mother's Day! She's excited 🙂 But anyway, back to topic - I get my steps during the day by jogging in place or walking fast in the morning before work. I try to get to 2,000 before I leave my house. It means I have to get up earlier in the mornings, but I think it's worth it. At my current job, I only get about 6,000 steps in, so have to figure out how to get the rest in.
In the future, hopefully looking to purchase a treadmill to walk/jog. On Amazon preferably and cheap. Any suggestions?

That is so true - walking with your dog is great. I walk my dog at least twice per day and do extra walks on the weekend. We both enjoy walks and it does increase our FitBit steps and add to overall fitness. Keeping walking and enjoying your FitBit.

Fantastic! So glad I helped! I'm working on more 'step' videos too. (Slightly obsessed with my Fitbit) Well done Flippy!

Today was kind of a sedentary day, so I decided to go out for a "short" walk through the country this afternoon. Before I knew it, I had gone a little over 5 miles. I always feel so much better after a little walk...

If I am at work and I am waiting for something to print I will take that time and pace around. I also try and get up every hour and walk around for at least 5 minutes. When I am at home I will try and walk around while watching the TV.

I work in an office with an hour for lunch so if I organise myself and take food in I take a walk into town and get myself back with half an hour to eat lunch and relax. Doing it everyday really makes a difference to my step count and I still feel like I'm getting a 'break' 🙂

Great topic! I walk a bit every hour, walk at lunch most days of the week, lead a hiking group at least once a week, and walk in place if I'm on the phone in my office and don't have to type anything!

Such an interesting thread, especially for those lazy sedentary days!
I work out of my home, and apart from my run outside or workout in gym, the rest of the day can get sedentary. To get some steps in, I like to walk around the house or hop on the treadmill when I take a phone call. 🙂

Yesterday, I had to go to a doctor's appointment at the hospital, which included visitiing the x-ray dept and lab. I decided to take the stairs to see what was on the 4th floor, go across the hospital and back down to the first floor in order to get to the x-ray dept which was right next to the doctor's office. Went back to the doctor's office by going back up to the 6th floor and across. Got in a little over 2,000 steps and 10 floors just visiting the doctor's office... The doctor said my HR and blood pressure was looking really good!
