I live about four miles from my workplace and although I haven't yet walked all four miles to or from work, there are a few games I play during the week to increase my stepcount.
Some days I'll take the hillier, windier, unnecessarily long route to BART (San Francisco's heavy-rail rapid transit system). Almost always, I forgo the escalator for the stairs. Today, that act alone added 5 flights of stairs and over 250 steps to my morning journey.
My other favorite "cheat" is high stepping in place. Sure, I may look a little odd bouncing up and down while typing at my makeshift standing desk, but it feels good to keep the blood flowing and the legs moving!
What do you do to get your extra steps in?

I take the stairs at work, go for walk during lunch, and when shopping park far away from the stores.

For many folks, myself included, walking doesn't do diddly, even when walking 20,000-30,000 steps in a day. That said, running makes all the difference in the world; if I run say 15,000 steps in a day and then walk another 5,000-10,000, then weight literally falls off my body.
So, for some folks walking may be some sort of a wonder drug, for other folks, nope, not so much.

My whole day is getting in extra steps.....break time, lunch time, waiting for the car to warm up, waiting for the walk signal, waiting for the elevator, waiting for the coffee machine, waiting for the dog to finish peeing on a bush.....lol
I pace and fidget and move.
After work I hit the gym for 60 minutes of focused treadmill steps but I use every free moment during the day to keep moving, moving, moving! : )

I jog or step in place all the time, usually while listening to an audio book. I've been making my way through a lot of the classics that I missed in my misspent youth. Now that I've gotten within spitting distance of my healthy weight range I can actually put some spring in my step, which is nice.

We've been on a 3-week Road Trip, and there have been many stops for sightseeing or rest stops. Each time we park at the far end of the parking area, where there is plenty of room for the truck & RV, and then walk to the destination. It gets lots of steps in, and feels great to get up and move instead of sitting & driving all day.

I walk to the bus stop every morning rather than drive to work. I use the stairs to the eleventh floor rather than the lift and I make an effort to get up and move around every hour from my desk. At lunch break I dont sit but rather walk around the city for the half hour break. I walk my dog every evening after work, come rain or shine!

When I had my own place I didn't have any sit down furniture in the living room where my tv was. The only furniture I owned was a bed. My laptop sat on the elevated bar instead of at a desk.
Sure, it was mostly because of financial reasons but it helped with staying mobile as well.
But now I have a couch and I just started watching Breaking Bad. So everytime Walter White coughs, is teaching, yells at Jessie, and "cooks" I get up and walk. Everytime Jessie gets "elevated", and says "yo" I get up and start walking.

When I go to school I like to get my extra steps through leaving early and walk to the busstop instead of biking. Also when I have a free hour while I´m at school I like to walk to the 3rd floor (highest floor of the building) and sit there instead of the first floor which is easier.
Also I like to as said before walk to the restroom across the building. That way I can relax my brains a little bit from styding and get my steps during the day as well.
Sometimes I also get a couple of steps for getting myself a bottle of water. Walking all the way down and up again gets my heart pumping haha
