Hula Hoop to get fit?

I have heard of using a weighted hula hoop for weightloss/getting fit. Has anybody tried this? If so how long do you hula hoop for in each session?

A weighted hula hoop does not sound like a good idea at all, especially for someone with any back issues.

I did a hoop class at a local fitness place, it wasn't weight too much, just 1# or so, it was a ton of fun!

I wouldn't recommend a weighted hoop since they can lead to back pain or bruises if you aren't careful or use them for too long at once. However, if you do get a hoop you should probably go with something a bit sturdier than the ones at the toy store since those can also lead to back problems. Hooping.org should have info on how to pick out a hoop that's right for you and get started if you're interested in hooping.

I've been hooping for a couple years and it's a really fun way to get and stay in shape, especially as you learn more tricks and can work some dance into it. 🙂 Definitely recommend it.

Bit late to reply, but I use a weighted hula hoop- 2kg, for about half an hour daily. Just a regular toy shop one that I filled with sand, does the job

Hey @SunsetRunner! I agree with you I did the sand adding to the inside of my hoop, and it workes great! It is a fun way to dance and exercise!Heart

I've only been hooping for a week, but I can tell you I certainly work up a sweat and feel like I've gotten a good workout! I use a 2-pound hula hoop and I wear my Blaze, set to the Workout setting. I usually do 30 minutes at a time. I burn between 224-250 calories per session, and the range is 90% Cardio. It's fun, and I'm getting the same workout that I would on a treadmill.

its fun and relaxing to do this.

a good weighted hoop gets your heart rate up for the time you use it.  Using it in 5 minute bursts every hour is my goal.  As I get stronger and better, I will extend my minutes.

Hi, Solange. Here's a link to the index of my hoop blog. It's got a ton of great tips for getting started and links to video tutorials. Here's a video of a recent practice session. It's a small space, so I'm not really tapping into the bag of tricks:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YICDwFkMJmM&feature=youtu.be

Hey, @thatursula! Wow! Thanks for sharing the video! I'll check it out as soon as I get home. Yeah I think that is my problem too, since I practice in my room and always almost break everything. haha Cat LOL But yeah the point is to exercise and have fun.

How much weight did you loose since you started?

I'll be waiting for your updates. 🙂

When I stick to a regular routine I can lose about 10 pounds in the first two weeks:  http://ursulahoophacks.livejournal.com/1080.html

I have a crazy stressful job, which has made it difficult lately, but I'm back on the horse and starting to gain momentum.

Simple waist hooping is a great stress reducer and it's the main weight reducer. Learning new tricks helps keep it interesting and helps keep my brain nimble.

I'm a fan of anything that gets people active though I would imagine you would need to combine it with a progressive training programme to see serious results.

No dancing or fancy tricks, but I can keep it going without the hoop falling down for about 10-15 minutes at a time now.  It really is a good workout!

I’ve been using my fitness hoop for a week now and have been slowly building it up as suggested by someone else from 3 minutes up to 5 then 10. I just wish there was a way to record this exercise on my Fitbit.
