March Madness 2023 — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

It is the third month of the year and time for the seasons to change on the calendar. March 20 is the Vernal equinox - spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere and the Autumn in the Southern hemisphere. Around Baltimore it feels like spring has already started. Trees are starting to flower, and tulips have broken ground and will probably bloom before April … so get out and move your body while you keep up with your monthly health goals.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

Since March will be the last month of winter for most of us (and summer from some of us), it’s a good time to get pics that show that change. A final snowfall, buds on trees, rabbits, birds and more. Just try to find three pics that somehow represent the March transition. Extra points for shamrocks in honor of Saint Patrick’s Day.

The End of WinterThe End of Winter

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

My goals are the same as February, but maybe this month I will get even closer!  I have added 30 - 60 minutes of housework daily; that is something I tend to ignore, but it also will help with exercises - or at least with getting me to move.

7,500 steps every two days                                                                                                                                6/14

walk for a minimum of 20 minutes per day                                                                                                       13/31

upper body strength exercises 3 times per week                                                                                            4/14

lower body strength exercises 3 times per week                                                                                              4/14

below calorie goal daily                                                                                                                                      10/31

3 photos per month                                                                                                                                               4/3

lose at least 0.2 lbs. per day                                                                                                                                14/31

a minimum of 30 - 60 mins housework daily                                                                                                      11/31

be down by 2.0 lbs. from start of month                                                                                                             yes/no

It will be hard to get transitional photos where I live, since we have winter here until about May, but I will see what I can do.  My tulips may start to come out, even if they don't bloom.  I will hunt for other signs of spring.

3/4/23.  I changed the calorie goal from a maximum of 1,400 per day to below calorie goal daily.  I have lowered my calorie goal to 1,300 max per day, but to prevent confusion if it changes again, I am just hoping to stay below my calorie goal, whatever that may be.

3/7/23.  Now I have lowered my step goal for a while.  I will work back up to it, two weeks at a time.  I am "long Covid', and my breathing is still a problem, actually I am preparing myself to have this problem until the day that I die.  I have lowered my step goal to 7,500 (from 10,000) for the next two weeks, then each two weeks, I will increase it by 500 steps.  It may not be quite so daunting this way.  I walk for 20 minutes at a time, and that is still something of a struggle, but it seems to be improving.  I may be able to increase my walks by 5 minutes every two weeks also.  I will just have to wait and see how it goes.

3/15/23.  Spring is starting in 5 days, but don't tell that to my front garden bed!

First day of March and already behind lol.  I had tickets to a musical after work which makes it a bit challenging to get steps in for those nights.  Gonna try to get a few extra today since we also are expecting snow tomorrow into Saturday with accumulations of 4-10" 😩

Busy with work today, but I got out and did my steps even when the app wouldn't load on my iPhone and I was sure those steps wouldn't count.

@SteppingBooks - you have had your share of crap weather this year. Hope you enjoyed the musical.

@Baltoscott  We really seem to have.  The last two winters or so we have ended up in these weird weather cycles where it will storm, get about 2-3 days of good weather, and then another storm.  I just hope we don't get another storm in April like last year.  Two feet of heavy wet snow in one storm.  The musical was good though.

I noticed that too yesterday, that the iOS app was crashing every time I opened it.  I half expected a sudden announcement that Fitbit was permanently offline without warning. The way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised.

Hi Jotex! Can you share how fasting works for you? What time do you choose to fast? I've heard of intermittent fasting and I'm interested in doing it....I need an accountability partner though for motivation and commitment.
