March Madness 2023 — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

It is the third month of the year and time for the seasons to change on the calendar. March 20 is the Vernal equinox - spring begins in the Northern Hemisphere and the Autumn in the Southern hemisphere. Around Baltimore it feels like spring has already started. Trees are starting to flower, and tulips have broken ground and will probably bloom before April … so get out and move your body while you keep up with your monthly health goals.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt — 3 pictures

Since March will be the last month of winter for most of us (and summer from some of us), it’s a good time to get pics that show that change. A final snowfall, buds on trees, rabbits, birds and more. Just try to find three pics that somehow represent the March transition. Extra points for shamrocks in honor of Saint Patrick’s Day.

The End of WinterThe End of Winter

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Hi @JayeD  — I started IF (intermittent fasting) about 1-½ years ago after reading ‘Delay, Don’t Deny’ by Gin Stephens. My eating window is usually from 11:30 - 19:30 (7:30 pm US). Before and after that, I only have black coffee, black tea or water … until the next day at 11:30. If I had a shorter timeframe for my eating window, I’d lose quicker (I’m fasting 16 hours, some fast 20 hours). But I’m 68, love to cook, and wanted from the get-go to do something sustainable for me for the rest of my life. I’ve lost about 20 pounds and want to lose another 10 (more or less). I don’t stuff food in my mouth for 8 hours. It’s just that’s the time when I can drink whatever I want and eat normally. Hope this gives you a rough idea. I can recommend the DDD book mentioned earlier.

I know it will be hard, but the only thing I can do is try.  I am hoping that with it being in writing, it will push me to work at it.  Where in Western Australia are you?  Once upon a time my sister lived in Perth, but only for a few years.  She is back in Sydney now.  My daughter lives in South Australia, and my brother is in Queensland.  I lived in NSW for 20 years, before I came to the States.  I miss the Australia I left in 1970, but on my one trip back (in 1995) it had changed so much, that it was almost a new country.  I'm not sure I can even call it home anymore now, but I still miss it.

4000 floors in the month:

I had some catching up to do after the first three days of the month, but managed 700 floors in three days soon after.  Snow fell after that - quite heavy stuff, so it will be flatter walks until that's gone.

WFH today; gotta figure how to maximize the time and get steps in.  We are expecting anywhere from 3 to 10 inches of snow tonight into tomorrow, so I'm likely going to be missing steps again tomorrow.

Best Answer

I can sympathise, @SteppingBooks!. Snow here in Shropshire fell for about 24 hours, and then has frozen hard, especially on paths where folk have walked.  I've had to redesign my walks with Walter so that we're on roads virtually of the time, as paths are generally too physically difficult to negotiate.  I can manage to keep my steps up, just about, but my floor count is taking a beating, as although we have a few residential roads going up slopes, they don't achieve the heights of our surrounding hills.  We've got a very cold night tonight down to -6 or -7 C, and then a big thaw on Sunday, which will probably be very messy and might bring some flooding.  I'm looking forward to Spring!
