What is a good goal of daily steps for someone in their 50s who hasn't considered fitness much in several years?

That would have been me nine months ago! I was 52, not overweight (but BMI close to 25) and in poor shape (very easily out of breath). I started with the standard 10,000 steps. After a couple of months I was at 15,000 steps and in the summer at 25,000. I'm now back to 15-20,0000, but I have other goals too. It took me five months before I started running. I also walked much slower in the beginning than now. The main thing is to get moving.

Hi guys! I'd recommend to start little by little. You could set a goal of 2500 steps a day for 2 weeks. Then increase to 5000 2 weeks later. This way you will avoid ankle injuries and you can increase the breathing technique in order to walk more steps in the future.
