November Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt
Wow. November. The year is nearly gone, but we’ve still got time for another challenge or two.
General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.
How It Works
The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.
Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”
Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.
Suggested Posting Format
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total
Picture Scavenger Hunt
While you are out and about getting in your walks/hike/rides this month take a few pics that show the changing seasons in your area, fall (or spring) colors, holiday displays, if you are in a beach area, the boardwalk shutting down or opening up, something that shows change.
Posting
Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week
Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

@WendyB Speedy recover!
So I did take at least one photo this morning in my adventures. I decided to take the pond trail to the wooden bridge. Its a short panoramic view of one side, but it kind of gives the gist of the seasonal change.

So sorry to hear you're in pain @WendyB. You are absolutely right to reduce steps and not 'stress' your leg any further until it heals. Wishing you a speedy recovery! 🌷

I have a question for this group. I need to buy new walking shoes (I can't jog or run with my arthritis). What would you recommend? Thanks in advance!

@Jotex Thanks
I recommend you go get fitted at a running shoe store. What I wear might not work for you. Your feet are worth it. Tell them you are a walker.
It could be more costly but you don't have to buy. Once you know you can go elsewhere.
My feet like Asics .
New balance gets.mentioned alot. But my feet do not like them at all
I mostly.look for sales on Amazon

Thanks for your advice @WendyB. I’ll try to find a shop that measures well. I’ve heard good things about Asics, so will take a look.

@WendyB For the little bit I walked, it is! I really should find time on a weekend to go further on the trails. They were a little muddy, but not bad. I definitely didn't want to go in for work after spending a few minutes out there.
@Jotex I absolutely LOVE my Asics. When Kohl's allows them to be on sale, I stock up on a few pairs (I rotate two pairs, and often replace a pair every 3-6 months, pending mileage). I usually buy any of the Gel series; though I recently bought a different series that says it's comfort for all-day wear. They've been good too so far. They've also been great for my plantar fasciitis. I agree with Wendy though about the New Balance. My mom likes them, but they just don't feel right on my feet when I try them in stores.

@Jotex I forgot about rotating shoes like @SteppingBooks said. I Also have 2 pair that I rotate.

I have a cold and boy is it kicking my arse! My ears hurt from the flying (pacing round airports got me almost 20k steps!) my joints ache and my sinuses hurt.
The bonus is that I'm drinking so much water. 2 litres yesterday and same today. I usually struggle to drink water.
I use Asics too. I went and properly got fitted for walking shoes. I aim to walk 2 hours daily. Auckland is also very notorious for it's hills so wanted proper traction on the shoes. So far so good and almost 12 months of wearing them
