OctoberFest Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

YIKES! It is the beginning of festival/holiday season. Already! Around here October will be beer festivals with the wurst and schnitzel, probably a trip to the Maryland Renaissance Festival, and a pumpkin carving party at the end of the month. With all that coming up, it makes sense to plan out fitness and eating goals for the month and check in with Fitbit friends to get support for hitting those goals. So lets get started!

 

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.   


 

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.   Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”  

 

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.  

 

Suggested Posting Format 


1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.


2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

 

Picture Scavenger Hunt

This month’s scavenger hunt is a little more free-flowing than the past couple of months. Tell a story with words and pictures about where you live - your neighborhood, your town/city. Maybe just about a particular building, or maybe the founding of the area, or maybe a famous person who lived in or visited or died where you live. It doesn’t have to be a lot of pictures and doesn’t have to be historical. Most comic strips are just 3 or 4 panels. But it does have to be pictures you take while walking this month. For example, here is a little moralistic story about locking your bike in the Baltimore/DC area from pics I took last month:

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week  

 

Injury Notice


If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

Went to Topeka Kansas for my 40th High School reunion.  Took a few pics and wound up with the jumbled storyboard below.

Steps 15k per day

20+ floors per day I cut my floors back because sometimes the weather or working in the yard keeps me from getting lots of floors.

7+ miles per day

2 sets of 12 reps of dumbell curls, triceps, shoulder shrugs, and chest flys, 3 times a week.

Three or more pics of each scavanger hunt topic. 

Check in at least 2x a week.

Last but not least, lose 3 more pounds, lost one in Sept

 

10/5 steps 19,842, 38 floors, 9.43 miles

10/6 steps 22,940, 18 floors, 10.7 miles

10/7 steps 25,575, 31 floors, 11.71 miles-------getting ready to go to horse camp this week, lots of back 7 forth between house and trailer, plus a 3 mile walk.

Had a very full day yesterday, beginning with getting up at 3:15 am to get ready and make the commute to Luzern (we live outside Bern). Taught two two-hour classes as substitute professor for a friend (business bachelor students). Made the long trip home. (Took an extra 30 minutes as our train was re-routed due to ‘technical difficulties’). Read and answered lots of happy birthday wishes, and then went out for pizza with some close friends. Came home and enjoyed a glass of wine with hubby, who came back earlier than planned from his Iceland adventure. Went to bed a tired but happy little puppy. All’s well that ends well, now that I am ..... 64!!!!

I am not going to make my goals today - sorry. Hubby came back earlier than planned from Iceland, and tonight we had our first raclette of the season — including white wine. 😋 Now nearly three sheets to the wind 💨.... 🙃😂

Hi all,

 

Well, it's time to get back on the accountability bus! It's hard to imagine but from January of this year to mid-september I gained about 16 pounds! Over the last month or so I've lost about 5 of those but obviously still have a long way to go. Reading through and interacting with a few of the Fitbit Community weight loss threads have helped get me back on track. Hoping increasing my activity will help even more! I'm jumping into this challenge mid-month, but will count retroactively.

 

Thru October 9th:

 

  • At least 10K steps daily: 6/31
  • 10 runs: 4/10
  • Lose 4+ lbs: 0.2/4

I'm 10 days late to the challenge, but here are my October goals: I'm coming off of a knee injury, so I'm keeping it manageable:

 

@ least 6,000 steps per day by 4 PM during the work week

@ least 8,500 steps per day for two days during the work week

@ least 5,000 steps on Saturday

--Not tracking Sundays--

Since I started the October Challenge late, I wanted to post my #'s up to the present. So far I've stayed on track with my step goals -- gotta make sure I hit my Saturday goal though. 

 

Monday 10/1/18 -- 10,418 steps

Tuesday 10/2/18 -- 5,175 steps

Wednesday 10/3/18 -- 10,516 steps

Thursday 10/4/18 -- 10,464 steps

Friday 10/5/18 -- 10,839 steps

Missed my sleep goal by just 5 minutes.  Don't think I'm going to be making my step goals this month.  I've been so lazy and unmotivated since my week long migraine in September.
