OctoberFest Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

ANSWERED

YIKES! It is the beginning of festival/holiday season. Already! Around here October will be beer festivals with the wurst and schnitzel, probably a trip to the Maryland Renaissance Festival, and a pumpkin carving party at the end of the month. With all that coming up, it makes sense to plan out fitness and eating goals for the month and check in with Fitbit friends to get support for hitting those goals. So lets get started!

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.   Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

Suggested Posting Format

1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.

2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

Picture Scavenger Hunt

This month’s scavenger hunt is a little more free-flowing than the past couple of months. Tell a story with words and pictures about where you live - your neighborhood, your town/city. Maybe just about a particular building, or maybe the founding of the area, or maybe a famous person who lived in or visited or died where you live. It doesn’t have to be a lot of pictures and doesn’t have to be historical. Most comic strips are just 3 or 4 panels. But it does have to be pictures you take while walking this month. For example, here is a little moralistic story about locking your bike in the Baltimore/DC area from pics I took last month:

1. What is ...1. What is ...2. A well-locked bike frame2. A well-locked bike frame3. What can be ...3. What can be ...4. A well-locked bike frame4. A well-locked bike frame

Posting

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

Injury Notice

If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

@CatLover74 — I am sympathetic on the sleep issues.  I’ve got 4 instances so far this month of being within 1/2 hour of my six hour goal (and two within 10 minutes).  My only consolation is that, on average, I am consistently sleeping at least 5.5 - 5.7 hours since I start trying to hit the 6 hour mark last March and it used to be closer to 5 hours before then.

October 11 Update

7 day average above 10k all month (I will check this daily) 11/31 Current avg 11580

18 days weights 6/18

4 hikes (3+ hrs) 0/4

2-4 lbs loss 0/4

I am adjusting things as I go, took out the running again, after my last two runs my foot was beginning to hurt again, not sure what's up, but will need more rest apparently. I have discovered I need much more rest with the added strength training. I have also adjusted my weight loss goal down to 2-4 lbs from 4-6 lbs. I have noticed I am not losing weight according to the scale, but the inches are falling off and so are my clothes 🙂 I might also not meet my hiking goals as again I am feeling like I need more rest and the weather has changed and some adjustments are needed...I do plan on adding more walking again though, more layers and trying to get used to walking in the dark...testing out some neighborhood where I can feel safe...also debating whether to get a gym membership for the fall/winter months, I found a gym near my home that is super inexpensive and allows no contracts...so I might do this on the weekend...I'll keep you posted 🙂 I'm still on the fence about the gym...

Although Wednesday I fell far short of my step goal, yesterday I was within a few hundred steps of making it; but just like the Energizer bunny (old commercial), when my 'battery' ran down, I just fell down, luckily in the bed. Today was much better, though. Wishing everyone a lovely weekend!

I've just popped in to say I probably will miss out this month. Two things happened. First, it always seems to take a couple of days for me to recover after traveling, which I did earlier this month. Then almost as soon as I got back I stepped up to help put out a metaphorical fire, and got people organised in the aftermath and recovery. Now it's no excuse for this affecting my goals, but it did, and I'm still getting back to things. Dealing with people at both ends of the world in opposite time zones does mess up your sleep a bit.

Next week I'm away for another two days, which will be full on (traveling and presenting all day sessions). This will take it's toll too. Oh to be fit and twenty or thirty years younger. (Actually, I don't mind the age I am. Really. But I am aiming to keep getting fitter again.)

So while I miss you guys, rather a lot in fact, I'm going to take my time to get back on track and look forward to catching up with you all in November 🙂

@SunsetRunner- it was nice of you to 'drop by' to say 'hello', even if you can't join in this month. Feel free to do that any time! Good luck on all that you have going on. BTW, I don't mind the 'age factor' either, because my goal is to get fitter. #kindredspirits #similargoals #thiscommunityrocks
