OctoberFest Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

YIKES! It is the beginning of festival/holiday season. Already! Around here October will be beer festivals with the wurst and schnitzel, probably a trip to the Maryland Renaissance Festival, and a pumpkin carving party at the end of the month. With all that coming up, it makes sense to plan out fitness and eating goals for the month and check in with Fitbit friends to get support for hitting those goals. So lets get started!

 

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.   


 

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.   Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”  

 

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.  

 

Suggested Posting Format 


1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.


2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

 

Picture Scavenger Hunt

This month’s scavenger hunt is a little more free-flowing than the past couple of months. Tell a story with words and pictures about where you live - your neighborhood, your town/city. Maybe just about a particular building, or maybe the founding of the area, or maybe a famous person who lived in or visited or died where you live. It doesn’t have to be a lot of pictures and doesn’t have to be historical. Most comic strips are just 3 or 4 panels. But it does have to be pictures you take while walking this month. For example, here is a little moralistic story about locking your bike in the Baltimore/DC area from pics I took last month:

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week  

 

Injury Notice


If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

I didn't make my step goal or my 250 per hour. I was painting for 3 hours and not moving. Having fun with my Bestie Smiley Very Happy Drinking Bloody Mary's  Smiley Very Happy for me. She drinks some Mule type thing. dont like itSmiley Surprised Moscow Mule Remembered!

Gained back most of what I had lost this month. Must do better before Halloween! 🎃 


Just realized I didn’t accurately update my weight loss stats. In the past week (or two — it’s been busy) I have gained back all I had lost this month PLUS 5 Pounds....!?!! I do hope it’s temporary....

Am posting for two days because yesterday I got into a long discussion with my husband and just forgot about logging in. Glad my weight has started going back to where it was at the start of Oct. Guess I’ll be lucky if I end the month with no weight gain — though I’m still determined to lose 2 pounds! 💪🏻

I have been strength training for about 4 weeks now...and up until now I was doing modified push ups...knee push up and more recently I have been doing 45 degree incline push ups...I wondered if I could do "real" push ups yet, so I just got down and tried...and OMG!!! I can do it...I did 3 full push ups!!! Pretty exciting stuff...still doing inverted rows instead of pull ups...but I can now start doing "real" push ups instead of modified ones...such a thrill!!

  • At least 10K steps daily: 15/31
  • 15 runs: 10/15 (upped based on another look at the calendar)
  • Lose 4 lbs: 1.2 / 4.0

October goals

Steps 15k per day

20+ floors per day I cut my floors back because sometimes the weather or working in the yard keeps me from getting lots of floors.

7+ miles per day

2 sets of 12 reps of dumbell curls, triceps, shoulder shrugs, and chest flys, 3 times a week.

Three or more pics of each scavanger hunt topic. 

Check in at least 2x a week.

Last but not least, lose 3 more pounds, lost one in Sept

 

10/18 steps 21,508, 25 floors, 10.22 miles

10/19 steps 18,589, 25 floors, 8.85 miles

10/20 steps 7,471, 10 floors, 3.37 miles ----- we took a fun day off and drove 3 hours to a Heritage festival and craft show. pictures below

10/21 steps, 18,068, 28 floors, 8.33 miles

 

Weights 12/12, did lose another 1/2 pound so 2.5 to go.

 Leaving tomorrow for another horse camp, will check in next week.

The festival was held at the Truman Dam recreation center on Truman Lake near Warsaw, MO. The craft show was in town but I didn't take any photos there as the craft stuff was mostly junk.

As of Sunday my weightloss for the month is 0.7 lbs.  Getting to the 2-4lb loss goal is unlikely, but since I've stopped counting calories and I'm still losing I'm pretty happy.  

 

I had the day off today and took a bike ride down to Baltimore's historic Green Mount Cemetery.  It is a really interesting.  I went because I knew that John Wilkes Booth is buried there and I wanted a current picture for our Scavenger hunt this month.  Here are a couple:  (He is buried in the family plot, but his grave is not marked.  The monument I'm leaning against is his father's, Junius Brutus Booth, an English Stage Actor.  It is a bit ironic that the elder Booth was named after one of history's more infamous assassins, and that he gave birth to another one of history's more infamous assassins).

I did not learn until just now that two other conspirators in the Lincoln assassination are buried in Greenmount Cemetery: Samuel Arnold and Michael O'Laughlen.  Now I will know to look for them next time I visit.

Darn, forgot to post my garden friend yesterday.  Here is a Speckled King snake sunning next to one of our raised garden beds. It got up to 68 yesterday. After sunning it slithered back into a hole in one of the railroad ties.
