OctoberFest Step Challenge and Scavenger Hunt

YIKES! It is the beginning of festival/holiday season. Already! Around here October will be beer festivals with the wurst and schnitzel, probably a trip to the Maryland Renaissance Festival, and a pumpkin carving party at the end of the month. With all that coming up, it makes sense to plan out fitness and eating goals for the month and check in with Fitbit friends to get support for hitting those goals. So lets get started!

 

General monthly instructions are below, including the monthly picture scavenger hunt.   


 

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to keep track of your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.   Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”  

 

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.  

 

Suggested Posting Format 


1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.


2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

 

Picture Scavenger Hunt

This month’s scavenger hunt is a little more free-flowing than the past couple of months. Tell a story with words and pictures about where you live - your neighborhood, your town/city. Maybe just about a particular building, or maybe the founding of the area, or maybe a famous person who lived in or visited or died where you live. It doesn’t have to be a lot of pictures and doesn’t have to be historical. Most comic strips are just 3 or 4 panels. But it does have to be pictures you take while walking this month. For example, here is a little moralistic story about locking your bike in the Baltimore/DC area from pics I took last month:

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week  

 

Injury Notice


If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

I've been such a lazy arse lately.  I haven't really been tracking stuff - although I do know I cracked 16,000 steps today, and about 14,500 yesterday, thanks to 8 hour shifts on my feet the last two days.  Need to start revising my goals for Nifty November (where the heck has the year gone?).

This week has been okay for a girl coming off of a sick stint.

Monday - 10/22/18: 10,323 steps

Tuesday - 10/23/18: 5,044 steps ( accompanied my sister to a thyroid biopsy...not much movement)

Wednesday - 10/24/18: 4,256 steps

Thursday - 10/25/18: 6,425 steps

OctoberFest Step Goals - Oct 26

10,000 steps - 19/20 days

Training w/weights - 12/15 days

40 jumping jacks - 17/20 days

Lose 2-4 lbs (@1-2 kgs) - +1.75/ 2-4 lbs

 

Was so busy and then eating fondue at the American Women’s Club Newcomers Evening, I didn’t reach goals yesterday. But got my steps in today, plus extra. Whoop! 

 

Will have to see where I stand on my weight tomorrow. Fondue yesterday, had a crowd over for tacos and guacamole today. I hope there’s a link between yummy food + lots of chatting, laughter and fun and (=) weight loss!!!! {Hey, a girl can hope, can’t she!? 😂}

 

Feeling homesick now, thanks to @shawnkp and her photos of Houston, Texas! 😍 Glad you’re feeling better! 👏🏻👏🏻  Have to get busy and get my scavenger board pics taken and posted!!!

@SunsetRunner start working on your routine -- In a few days I'll start a challenge scavenger hunt for November.  Sounds like it will be called "Nifty November' so keep an eye out in the Moving Forum.  (I will also try to tag everyone who posted this month, so you'll probably get a notification.  December will probably be a little different.

October 28 Update

Maintenance weight (164-168) 28/31

 

I am switching back to losing weight. I feel like my body has adapted to my new strength routine and I have been slowly cutting calories and have found a good deficit that feel doable and has gotten my weight moving down again. From today I will be tracking a loss instead of maintenance. I was eating at maintenance for last month after I noticed an increased hunger, I felt I needed to listen to my body and let it adjust to my new strength routine. I'm glad I did, the break was nice and I made some nice strength gains. I am comfortable going back to losing after testing some deficits.

Gained a bit of weight this week taking the monthly loss to about 1/2 lb.  Don’t expect to make the 2-4 lbs, so I’ll be carrying that goal forward to next month.  Technically still have chance for the sleep goal, but I can’t sleep in during the week, so that will be tough.  

 

Weight training is done for the month and I’ve got a rest week before I start a new cycle.  Now I’ve got to plan out my routines.
