I would suggest books on audio would be a better choice than trying to read.
The reason you have to have your fitbit on the other hand, your fitbit uses montion to detect steps. So if you are holding your Kindle, or pushing a shoping cart, or just not moving your arm, your fitbit can't detect the steps.

To read and walk is kind of pointless.
1. You can't conctentrate on walking.
2. You can't concentrate on reading properly.
3. The risk to run something over or fall is just too high.
Why not reading while laying or sitting, and having a walk afterwards ?

Has anyone had any success reading and walking? I'm thinking in the house, not out walking somewhere? I'be already worked out I need to hold my kindle in my right hand (fitbit on left wrist) otherwise my steps don't seem to count. But I've not found it very easy to read and walk!
Try a book on tape if you insist on reading while walking.

Think you're probably right! I'be just seen people with workstations so they can email, watch TV, game etc. whilst stepping and wondered if anyone had managed this for reading!
I haven't in a while, but I used to regularly read my kindle when on the treadmill (built-in shelf for tablets).
Nowadays, I have enough Youtube subscriptions that I nearly always have something new to watch... and if my wife's working out with me, she's on the other treadmill and we're watching a movie on the TV.

I have learned that if you have a wrist fitbit, like a Charge, you can put it in your pocket and it will track your steps if you're not moving your arms as if you were walking. (When I shop at Costco, I walk around the whole shop - and have my charge hr in my pocket to track my steps, since my hands are resting on the cart. )

Thank you for this! When I am on the treadmill I like to hold the sides sometimes but noticed that I am missing out on steps as it's not tracking them when I hold the side or top of the treadmill!
I will have to give this a try!

my husband put a shelf across my treadmill so I can place my Kindle there. Before I had a set back with a foot problem, I was doing 3 miles on treadmill and reading my Kindle.
