Readjust August — Step Challenge and Photo Scavenger Hunt

 

Late summer usually means some vacation for my family, and this year is no exception; except it is a bit. Not flying anywhere, but will be taking a road trip. Indoor eating at restaurants is off-limits at the moment, so we will be getting a lot of takeout and trying out the kitchen in the house we will rent.  Exercise won’t involve the gym, but there will be a lot of bike rides, unicycle practice and walking.  In sum, there will be lots of adjustments during Readjust August. :-). 

                                     

How It Works

The primary purpose of these monthly challenges is to encourage you to set and hit your daily step goals for the month; though many of us track other things as well, like body weight exercises, sleep, trips to the gym, logging food, etc. This is not a competition to see who can do the most of whatever, instead it is a challenge to measure your consistency. So whether you do 1k, 5k, 10k or even 40k steps a day, this is measuring how many days out of the monthly total you can hit your goal.

 

Some might have a constant goal of 10k steps every single day and others might have a variable goal throughout the week, (and some might even plan days off!) for example.
Monday -> Friday = 10k steps a day
Sat & Sun = “6k steps a day,” or “not tracking”

 

Regardless of how you structure your daily goals, the only thing that matters for the monthly challenge is whether or not you reach what you set out to do.

 

Suggested Posting Format    
1) Post either your constant or variable step goal.
2) Keep track of the # of daily goals achieved out of the monthly minimum and or monthly total

The theme this August is a nod to wanderlust and the road (some will note this is a repeat from August last year).  My friend @NellyG suggests bridges and overpasses along the way, and water when you get there … or was it the other way around?  Well, post your goals below and post your pics throughout the month.

Although you certainly don’t have to post daily, you’ll likely stay closer to what you set out to do by updating the thread several times/week

 

Injury Notice
If you injure yourself during the month and need to scale back due to the injury, then all you have to do is adjust your goal for that period. If you normally do 10k steps a day but pull a hamstring and decide to do minimal walking (2k steps a day), then all you have to do is change your goal.

I had a group of friends over Thursday evening, which went late, so forgot to post. Yesterday I ran out of energy so couldn't reach a higher step count or do any exercises, and again forgot to post. Yikes! Today I'm making Taqueria-style Pickled Jalapeños and Carrots (8 1/2 pint jars).

Back in Baltimore after two weeks on the beach in Delaware.  Nice to be home.  Pic below is of signage I saw when riding my bike through Towson University.  About six or so messages  repeating every 50 yards or so on the walkways around campus.  According to this one, if the students come back, they will have to log in daily and complete a symptom screening and temperature check. It is going to be interesting to see how this all plays out.

This week (and really the next two weeks) will be absolute chaos for me.  New student orientation Wednesday, classes starting next week, and everything is still up in the air. 

 

On the plus side, I found a cute fold-up, sit/stand desk at Michael's for half off!  So, I at least can sit at a desk now to work from home.  On the negative side of it, I think I pulled some muscles carrying it in the store (of course it was ALL the way in the back), and then up the stairs in my house.  Geesh, I'm going to be a mess by the time we get back to the offices.  Happy Half-way Through August!

Arthritis has flared, causing a lot of pain this weekend. I’m looking at my foods and and trying to identify what might be causing inflammation. Looks like I may have to eliminate flour for sure, and significantly decrease potatoes and other starches, and sugar (thankfully I don’t have a sweet tooth).

Completely forgot to post these days – busy week but good news is I kept up my daily walk, although I moved times to earlier in the day as it is so warm in the Pacific Northwest. Able to get my walk in and small shopping – feeling very cosmopolitan shopping for 2 days’ meals at a time.

With the heat wave in the Pacific Northwest (not really that bad - high 80/low 90 degrees) I was out early for my weekend walks AND the day is totally different that early in the morning. Was able to get in really good (for me) distances - double my goal amount on both Saturday and Sunday. Hope everyone else had a great weekend.
