Seated exercise

I can’t walk nor stand. So I exercise sitting in a chair exercising arms.

I know the step count on my Ionic is not right, I don’t step.

What about calories used? Is that measure correct on my band?

I’m not able to stand or walk. So I exercise sitting in a chair and exercising my arms. So I know my step count on the Ionic is not right; it counts hundreds of steps from arm exercises.

But what about calories used? Is that info on my Ionic accurate?

its impossible for it to know your steps as movements are kinda the same from when you use your arm and when you walk, it calculates actions that feel like steps, the calories used is abit more accurate due to the fact it knows your height and weight, im unsure how correct it will be for someone who cant walk but i think on paper it should be corect coz seen as you aint moving your legs your heart rate will be lower, but if you are working your arms that will bring your heart rate up, maybe not to someone doin activities with full body, but it should still calculate your height + weight + heart rate = calories used

Thanks for your reply. I was thinking like you. It’s the weight part of that formula that has me stumped. Fitbit knows my standing weight, but I’m seated.

Hi @Enbleu,

The Ionic uses your heart rate data (plus your profile info) to calculate calories burned. So anything that elevates your heart rate, even arm exercises, will be counted as calorie burned.

Thanks, that’s sorta what I was thinking. It’s the weight part in my profile that has me confused. When I exercise I’m sitting, not moving whole body.

It's fine whatever movement you can do that gets the heart rate up. A friend can get his heart rate going pretty well just by breathing quickly for a few minutes while sitting. If the heart works, then it'll work.

Ok will do. I’ve been doing my sitting exercise daily for 1 hour. I aim to burn 2000 more calories than I eat daily. Thanks for your info.

@Enbleu: you posted the same question twice, to the Eat Well forum and to this forum (Get Moving). I merged them on this one (since it’s more related to getting moving than eating well). Please refrain from crossposting, as recommended in the Community Guidelines (under Use good network etiquette).

Thanks for comment. I eat 1800 calories. Burn 4000 calories, according to my Ionic and Apple Watch. But is that 4000 accurate?

At 1800 in and 4000 calories out daily, it would be expected you'd lose around 4 pounds per week. Compare that to your actual weight loss, and it'll give you an idea of how accurate the calories in/out are for you.

yep, if you lose 2200 per day you should be losing 1lb every 2 days @ that rate

And there’s the problem. I know the calories eaten. It’s the calories used is what I question. I’m not losing much.

how fast is the scale saying you lose weight?

I’ve stopped weighing, it’s a discouraging 0 - 1.25 lbs week.
By the way, my resting heart rate can be as low as 48bpm overnight. So maybe my resting calories burned is lower than the 2400 calories a day Fitbit and Apple calculate.
Thanks!
