Seniors exercises

I am a senior in my seventies with all the usual aches and pains associated with those of us who lived that long! My knees hurt, my back hurts, and usually the first words out of my mouth in the morning are: "Ouch!" and "Yikes". I really enjoy the Versa 3 for keeping records of my heart rate and other physiological factors. I find that so helpful. But I can't seem to find any guided exercises specifically for seniors. I tried following one workout once and that was a disaster. I found out pretty fast that my legs, knees and other parts don't move as fast or as far as I thought they still could. I do a lot of walking though and can still do that okay although when I do 10,000 steps or more in a day, I pay for it the next. Are there any plans to include senior plans in your coaching videos and suggestions for more realistic goals? Thanks very much.

Hi @Oldraven

I have found the exercises led by coach Mark to be quite good for the days when I am a bit achy! I also filter on 'moderate' or 'chair based' (not as easy as they sound!) and have found some good sessions. Most of the workouts also have a lower impact alternative too so you can drop a gear if needed.

I would say though that I think the workout search could be significantly improved to narrow down what you are looking for. Over to Fitbit.....

Good luck!

Hello @Oldraven

I've been using workouts on YouTube. One of my favorite channels is yes2next (<-- click link). The workouts are done by a daughter & her 80+ year old mom. The daughter is a personal trainer with senior fitness and functional training specialist certifications from the American Council on Exercise and The Biomechanics Method for Corrective Exercise.

I like that their workouts are easy to follow and do. It's also helpful that her mom does modified versions of the workouts for those that need it. Her mom also has a great sense of humor.

It's an option you might want to consider.

Hi @RiekoC and @Oldraven ,

You Tube is a great idea, there's so much on there.

I would love to see the Fitbit workouts available via YouTube so we can view them on a full size screen rather than a tiny phone which is far from ideal. Given that Fitbit and YouTube are both part of the Google family it seems like it should be straightforward to link the accounts so that only Fitbit Premium users can see the workouts on YouTube. Seems obvious to me as I know several users are frustrated by the small screen situation🤔

Sorry, I have strayed off topic....

I am a senior 72 yrs  I walk every day with my wife , less now because my wife has a hip problem, waiting for a scan. I have some similar problems sore back sore shoulders  knees . I cycle  frequently and the muscle I built up in my legs seem to help with the other problems.  I have pains in certain areas for a year walked less , was able to cycle and the following year leg pains disappeared.   I really enjoy the outdoors close to beautiful walking and bike paths.  My average daily walking is over 20,000 steps and I cycle 3500 kms per year, I live north of Montreal and we have never stopped walking even in cold weather, I am lucky to have a wife who  also loves walking.  Strangers ask us often  about our walking , they see us walking all the time. I jokingly tell them we don't get along in the house so we walk outside all the time. We frequently bring our breakfast and eat it in the woods.

I actually got on my Fitbit account on my computer to see if I could gain access to my premium features on a larger screen!!!  Youtube would be fantastic!

Hi RiekoC

Thanks for that info. I will look into the you tube channel you suggested. Sounds just what I need. I find the exercises on Fitbit are not geared for older folks. I tried one of the easy yoga sessions and realized my legs don't bend that way any more without a great deal of agony. The kind of info you are providing is really helpful.

 Thank you again

I don't think you are straying from the topic at all. Having a You tube channel devoted to guided exercises is a great idea.

Question is, how do we get that done!

Thanks very much Goldsgirl

Yes the bigger screen would be very helpful. Trying to follow the moves on the I phone is almost impossible.

Hi @Oldraven

Good to hear from you again.

I noticed that the yes2next YouTube channel recently posted a chair yoga workout (link below) that I plan on trying. April does a great job of doing moves that don't bend our older bodies in ways that could result in pain.

If your computer is a Chromebook you might be able to install the phone app from the Play Store as an Android App.  Not perfect but so far, so good, for me.

Cardio Load target:  72 - 106; Daily Readiness: 76; but I've exercised the last three days in a row and I'm feeling a little tired.  Time to listen to the bod and take the day off.
