Apparently that milestone, which is associated with the whole fitness tracking/quantified-self trend, is not rooted in science. It was just a Japanese marketing campaign.
What milestone is good for your health, based on science?
7,000. There are benefits in doing more but then there are diminishing returns.

Interesting point — I’ve read similar studies showing that around 7,000–8,000 daily steps can give most people significant health benefits, with only modest gains beyond that for the average adult. It’s more about consistency and overall activity than hitting an arbitrary number.
