I - and everyone else at my gym - wears trainers. I can see that they are useful on the treadmill, but who needs £100 shoes when you're doing weights or on the rowing machine? Well, I do - but I don't know why. I suppose you don't want to slip. One of my fellow gym members said, when I asked her 'they just look good.' Which is true.

On machines I would say you need a decent tread so your feet don't slip. When I lift weights I tend to wear them as I'm putting more stress on my feet in general and I want good cushioning. I do some of my walking about the house and garden in my bare feet. However, on a treadmill, I always wear them.

I have Plantar Fasciitis, therefore cheap shoes are the enemy. I buy Merrell trail runners, for the arch support and shock absorbent heels. I'm not going to change shoes, between the treadmill and weight lifting. The tread is a bit excessive for indoor training, but they are great for walking/hiking outside. I'm only inside, if it's too hot to be outside. The shoes tend to stick to the pavement, when it hits 117 degrees...

What other option would there be? I couldn't wear "daily" shoes to the gym- I would look crazy. And I have to say, there are a few gents who come in wearing flip flops or sandals and I have to wonder what would happen if they dropped a weight. I know there isn't much protection in a sneaker- but better than bare toes...right?

The gym I use prohibits wearing of sandals or flip-flops in any exercise rooms. And, they require seperate shoes for using the gym floor (basketball court) that have not been worn outdoors. "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Workout"
