That's a really good question and I'm interested to see what responses you get. My advice is wear the right shoes. That's important to avoid injury, especially if you're not used to walking for exercise.

I've started to wear a backpack. Mainly, it keeps my phone dry if I run into rain. I also take clippings of any interesting plants that I see.
You can also put weights in it (sandbag, water, dumbbells), which would increase your calorie burn.
Upping your pace will also increase your heart rate, increasing your burn.
