The recommended amount does depend on weight, height, gender and how active you are (the more active, the more you need to drink!) - I usually aim for 2 litres a day.

A good rule of thumb is to take your weight in pounds and divide it by 2. That is generally the amount of ounces you should drink in a day. More if you are doing a lot of exercise.
You are getting enough if when you pee, it's light in color. That darker your urine, the more concentrated and less hydrated you are.

That's what I do: look at the colour. The good thing about being a male in his fifties with a growing prostate is you get many occasions to perform a visual inspection during the course of the day
When it's colourless, I know I'm drinking enough. No need to use the stupid (for metric users) quick add presets (236.6 ml, 499.8 ml, 730.5 ml and 1,014.4 ml) of the mobile app.

And this preferred method, rather than some claim half your weight in ounces which came from who knows where, also accounts for that fact there is water in food and other stuff you drink, and it counts too.
I'm really not sure where it got started that more is better. Your body only needs so much, in fact too much can cause electrolyte imbalances too. About the only thing it can help with is if you had more sodium than normal, it can help balance that out for a bit before body naturally gets rid of it anyway.
