Women Weightlifting!

Hey lovely ladies! (or helpful men!)

I'm a 22 year old woman looking to get into weight lifting (my cario game is on point, but I wanna get strong!) and I was hoping to get some advice on where to start in the weight room. Most of the things I find online are so male-tailored, and it would be helpful to get some lady-advice!

Thank you for you help! Heart

You could look into New Rules  of Lifting for Women (Lou Schuler, Cassandra Forsythem Alwyn Cosgrove) - seems to be sound and will get you started.

I second New Rules.  I also recommend The Female Body Breakthrough by Rachel Cosgrove.

I addition to the books mentioned, I would check out bodybuilding .com.  The site has a number of areas dedicated women's fitness / lifting.  Dont worry its not all geared towards body building they have program outlines for many different goals.  One of the interesting sections is the transformations where they show a before and after and what programs / nutrition the person followed to get the result.

I hired a personal trainer to teach me strength/weight training. I felt I needed some guidance to make sure my form was correct. I know trainers can be pricey but I found one that was in my budget and to me it was money well spent!! I am stronger then ever! Most trainers will offer a package plan if you sign up for x about of sessions.

I know what to do now and can use the equipment properly and am not imitated to intermix into the machines the 'big guys' are using....they gladly step in to spot me if needed. I do still use my trainer, he challenges me beyond what I would put myself through.

I agree about getting a trainer if possible.  I went through a "functional fitness"program a few years ago and having a trainer really helped in terms of form and motivation.    As I have stepped back into the gym now, I am sure that having a trainer would be helpful - but the NROL for women is definitely useful as long as I don't exceed my ability & injure myself.

I am SUPER passionate about strengh training, and all that passion came from the gals over at www.girlsgonestrong.com .... they are seriously AWESOME! I have been working out since January and lost about 20 pounds just walking and doing cardio here and there. Then i found the GGS girls and they have seriously changed my whole life! I lost 11 pounds last month and have become so much more strong by doing their program - The Modern Woman's Guide to Strength Training. And they are SUPER nice. I talk to Molly Galbraith on the daily on Twitter. She's always up to answer any of my ridiculous questions. Worth every single penny i put into the program. You can also check out Jen Sinkler over at Lift Weights Faster. I also do some of her workouts for my "off" days because she provides some amazing exercises for quick cardio. Both of these programs kind of work together, because girls gotta stick together. ESPECIALLY in the weight room!

Good Luck to you! and it's soooo awesome to hear other women saying they want to lift heavy things 🙂
