It was suggested that I share what I did when I found myself in a cast, non weight bearing, for 12 weeks...
I was in a cast (non weight bearing) for 12 weeks following foot surgery. During that time I was able to keep up with a cardio routine that involved upper body only.
First, I found a cheap hand bike on Amazon. I did this for 30 minutes following my Beatburn Cycling iphone app that uses my music but changes the music's tempo according to where you are in the apps program. I just hand cycled to the beat of the music. This gave me some interval training. For the second part, I did an upper body only cardio routine I found on youtube. I downloaded this video. The video is 30 minutes. I added 1 and 2 pound weights, and I also used the Beatburn app for this with my music. I switched weights as the app told me to increase resistance. Since I was listening to the app, I just muted the cardio video.
For both of these routines, I kept my Fitbit on and counted my arm motions as "steps." I definitely was able to work up a sweat and get my heart going doing these. For 3 months total, this was my only exercise. The links for the bike and the video are below.
