I like cross training best. 🙂 And swimming. Less likely to get injured (or bored) if you vary exercise.

I also like cycling. 🙂 I take my bike off the street and onto the trails and listen to music.

First, suggest you think about your goals.

Diet is for weight loss - done right just fat loss, done wrong includes muscle mass loss.

Eat less than you burn daily - Fitbit helps accomplish that.

Exercise is for heart health and body improvement and rarely has weight loss as side effect - done right though it can support fat loss, done wrong muscle mass loss too.

Only thing exercise helps with the diet is it increases your daily burn, so when you eat less, it may still be enough you'll actually adhere to the plan, compared to eating level if you did no exercise.

Other term - toning. No such thing actually.

You lose fat, you'll expose what's underneath, if you got no muscle there, nothing will show up.

Need strength training for that, and at the start of weight loss is the only brief period in this journey where you could in theory actually gain muscle mass, but as you lose weight and lift longer - forget it, not possible until you eat in a surplus later.

Getting in shape?

Again, that would imply a shape to the body - lifting.

Cardio only usually just leaves someone a smaller version of current self. All too common to end up skinny fat at goal weight. So appear thin, but the flappy arms and jiggle everywhere tell the story about what's really there - no shape.

But you could also mean cardiovascular shape - so some cardio 3 x weekly for 30 min is good for that.

So what do you enjoy doing based on past experience or current attempts, and what are actual goals besides weight loss?

Oh, and the above recommendation for circuit training is great idea, big burner compared to regular lifting so you get to eat more, some cardio improvements to it, and some strength improvements, helps retain whatever muscle mass you got if deficit isn't too extreme.

Have been using a c25k app to ramp up cardio training. On off days from running do weight training. Depending on wether looking to build strength or tone can adjust sets and reps. Suggest starting with a full body workout using big compound movements.

You can probably find any type of workout on youtube.  They also have some free workout streaming sites. Google can help you find them. Best wishes in your transformation.

Hi Megan. I would suggest taking a look at Hasfit. They have a whole series of workout videos of varying intensity, for all ages groups. I like their stuff a lot; and best of all, it's all FREE.

One good resource is a book "Strength Training for Fat Loss" by Nick Tumminello.  I normally do not recommend any specific workout on the web because the web is full of "cookie cutter" workouts that may not best fit your goals.

However, Tumminello's book offers a number of different workouts, is loaded with pictures on how to correctly do the exercises, plus the author is regarded as a top strength and conditioning coach.
