@PHS273 elevation gain is the sum of all climbs up (going uphill). Elevation loss is a cumulative elevation acquired by going downhill (sum of all downclimbs). When running a loop elevation gain and elevation loss should fall very close (if not the same but barometers are not perfect). Fitbit does compute the elevation gain using the data from a barometric altimeter (not GPS, it does not support elevation correction using GPS data which is quite obvious when looking at the elevation profile). For example, the hilly and demanding run may give you something 500+m el. gain while running on a relatively flat surface will be something like 0m - 40m (made up numbers just to show the scale). It also depends on the distance, it's different to run with 500m el. gain on 5k and 21k distances, the 5k and 500m el. gain will be probably a murderous effort. When I plan my runs, I do plan for elevation gain, too (elevation gain is one of my weekly goals as I train to run hills).
