hip replacement surgery

I'm going to have hip replacement surgery in the near future and would like to hear from other peoplewho are also awaiting surgery or have already had it.  I am overweight and having a lot of difficulty getting exercise.  I try to walk as much as possible but if I overdo it, I have a lot of pain during and later.  Even working out in a pool (not even swimming) causes pain.  I was slender and very active most of my life--hiking into wilderness areas in Montana, crosscountry skiing, swimming, square dancing, any kind of dancing, didn't own a car till I was 30--I loved being active.  It's killing me now--both literally and figuratively.  I have all the metabolic syndrome maladies and it's scary.  I've gone from being very healthy to a mess.  I could use some encouragement and some shared stories and, of course, advice.  I'm glad you're all out there.

@Martha_963  I've not personally had a hip replacement, but have known two people who did. Both were men and both were overweight. Before surgery they hurt. After the recovery phase, they felt years young and they were able to walk without pain.

One of the men was a co-worker and he was very overweight and had medical problems since birth. His surgery allowed him to walk more normally without the constant pain. He eventually had his other hip replaced, too.

The other man was a family member in his 80s. He was having problems with his hip hanging up on him, to where it hurt to go up and down stairs or do his normal activities. Before he had fully recovered, he was putting on his walking shoes and strutting about like a man half his age. The difference in him was remarkable. No longer hurting and able to stand up without the need to lean on a cane. He's still happy a few years later and wishes he'd done this much sooner.

Martha, you've taken the right step in going the surgical route. You've had the pain of living with this, so now it's time for you to stop hurting and get back to living the life you want. You are motivated, which will help you to recover faster. You'll be stronger and ready to face anything, once that chronic pain is gone.

Thank you so much!  My hope for a better (and more like me) future is a lot less threadbare and tired now.

The article and exercise program below might be worth a read for you. I hope the surgery was/will be successful.

@Martha_963I notice you are active on your profile. Did you have the hip surgery, and if so, how is it going ?

I had the surgery in January. Sped through rehab -- they even discharged me early. Then...because I was very eager to get back to being active, I overdid it. I started having a lot of pain. X-rays showed nothing wrong so my Dr. said to slow down and he put me on ibuprofen 800mg. I'm doing great now but still have to take it easy. I would like to go horseback riding later this summer so I gotta be good. I'm walking as much as I can and that's a good thing. Thanks for asking.
