how many calories does weight lifting burn?

I know weight lifting helps you continue to burn calories throughout the day, but does anyone know approximately how many calories the weight lifting burns? And does the fitbit accurately reflect the calories burned while weight lifting? (I just got mine and haven't tried it yet)

Congratulations on getting your Fitbit. 

 

The first thing to note is that fitbits are pedometers. That means they are great at tracking step based activities such as walking and running, but not so great at tracking other activities, such as weights.

 

We therefore have to manually log these activities using this procedure:

It terms of your specific question, I'm afraid I can't give you a definitive answer about how many calories weight lifting burns, but I can say that if you use the procedure above, fitbit will work it out for you.

Fitbit is also not a Heart Rate Monitor. It will show you the calories burned but its not as accurate as a HRM.

 

Also the Calorie burn is different for everyone as it goes by weight, height, age, sex.

Weight lifting doesn't burn as much as high intensity cardio minute-for-minute but is does a) build muscle (which burns more calories at rest than fat) and b) continue to burn calories even after you're done because your body uses energy to rebuild the muscles you broke down. 

 

That said, this site has a calculator to help you determine how many calories you burn based on your weight, how heavy you lift, and what exercise you're doing. As a weight lifter myself, I try not to put too much stock in how many calroies it burns especially since it's important to take in more protien (and therefore more calories) in order to help build muscle. But, the more muscle, the more calories you burn overall. Hope this helps!
