I have worn my FitBit Flex while Kayaking and Stand Up Paddle Boarding a few times. It does work but a lot like biking, you'll get relatively few "steps" in and it will show as low activity level even if you're paddling hard and fast since the turnover rate of your paddle is relatively slow when compared to foot step rates per minute even at a slow walking pace. If you do wear your FitBit while paddling, make sure that it is a model that is approved for use in a water environment.

you can use an activity based calorie burn calculator found at www.shapsense.com. then select activity based calorie burn. you input your age, weigh and height. then activity category select water sport, it will then provide you with another drop down your activity as pick kayaking. then enter your minutes.
for me, age 50 , 165 lbs, 45 min would burn 220 calories.
i do not think i would wear my fitbit kayaking as i am new to this sport and the flex is water resistant not water proof, i leave it in the car.

I have used my Zip while kayaking and have found that it does not track any "steps". I have found, however, that activating "track exercise" on my iPhone Fitbit app at the same time does track my distance by GPS and gives me approximately 2280 "steps" per mile tracked. This data is sent to the app and the Zip when synced. It would be nice if "track exercise" had more options than run/walk/hike, e.g. strokes.
