low impact exercise?

On my doc's advice, my new step goal is 7,000 to protect a bad knee. I'm too young for replacement. Too old to safely ignore the pain and just push past it. I will be working with a personal trainer to see what low impact cardio I can do, but I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience. Advice? Suggestions on how to stay active while still protecting my knee?

The thing is ... a year ago, I got my life back. I made significant life style changes to how I eat, started exercizing, walked my first 5k, and lost 61 lbs. I like this life style! I finally enjoy exercise! Still have 25 lbs to lose and am determined NOT to have this turn into an excuse to go back to my couch potato days.

I was a runner for many years and suffered knee and foot pain.  In 2009 I purchased a Concept2 rower and use it almost every day for 30 minutes.  I am approching 6,000,000 meters.  I recommend going to their website www.concept2.com and finding a local gym or hotel that has one. You can give it a try and see if it bothers your knee.  Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestion. I think my gym has a rowing machine. I'll check it out.

If you have a gym membership try spin class.  Cycling on a stationary bike is pretty low impact.  Some of the routines involve standing but if your knees hurt you can sit in the saddle and still get a really good workout.   If you've never taken a spin class before I recommend arriving a bit early and asking the instructor to setup the bike for you - its a large part of the training/certification and if done properly will make sure there is no stress/strain on your knees, hips, lower back or hands. 

 

Plus the music is generally very motivational!
