Back to the Basics

I watched a second documentary on the life expectancy in Japan. With all of the diets currently available, I look at Japan with amazement. Two million people over 90 years old, 68,000 over 100. Fad diets are just like expensive fishing lures, they catch fishermen, not fish. Okinawa is especially interesting.

These people eat mostly what they grow - they eat lots of fermented foods - they limit the amount of fish and lean meat - they WALK or BIKE - they manage their stress, and they have residents still working in the fields in their 80's and 90's. So, the basics continue to be, eat well and keep moving …..

I did not see the documentary.

I found this confusing so can you explain? I thought they ate a lot of fish "they limit the amount of fish and lean meat"

@WendyB I would like to see more information on that documentary. Not because I don't believe what @SunsetRunner said but because I'd love seeing what is said about the Japanese way of life.

I tried posting the YouTube link twice. Said it was removed so I gave up. Try looking for this report on YouTube. Shouldn't be hard to find.

I did not see the documentary either, but i came across some vital information which is extremely very reasonable.

More realistically, the Japanese seem to have their finger on the pulse when it comes to lifestyle. Their diet is lean and balanced, consisting mainly of fish, seafood, whole grains, vegetables and tofu. The processed Western foods that science is now linking to an array of health issues are largely absent from Japanese plates.

This healthy approach to eating reflects in the country’s rate of obesity, which is impressively low at just 3.5 percentage of the population . It hardly needs saying that obesity is now considered a killer, linked to everything from coronary heart disease to diabetes and cancer.

And, importantly, the Japanese start young. Schools in the country adhere to dietary guidelines that Jamie Oliver can only dream of, with lunch plans consisting of very little refined sugar.
