Something to keep in mind for holiday fare. Eat the things that make you happy. You don't have to have everything offered. Just focus on the components of the meal that are special to you. We go to my niece's house, my sister in law makes scalloped potatoes like my Mum used to...swimming in butter, with a block of cheese melted in there. I will have seconds if not thirds. My niece's cookies NOMNOMNOM. But the other things I can have a polite spoon of and I'm fine. L' Chaim

Our solstic dinner is always nice and filling. This year: homemade bean soup, vegan stuffing and mushroom gravy, a corn casserole my son loves (and makes!), and a never before tried mushroom/green bean dish. We do traditional US food on T'giving and give in to our 'wild' side at the end of the year 🙂

i don't concern myself with the occassional splurge. i just limit the portions of carby food and can still eat plenty of the good stuff. this year:
standing rib roast from the local butcher (the good stuff)
brussel sprouts cooked with bacon, stone ground mustard, parmesan, horseradish (the good stuff)
gravy (the good stuff)
mashed potatos (the ok stuff)
chocolate mug cake (the good stuff)
what it typically translates to is a little water weight gain for about 3 days then i go back down to my original weight.

Roasted pork leg
Mashed potatoes
Gravy
Greens salad
Nutella Mousse (super easy recipe)
That is the main dinner, throughout the day I'll have tamales, grapes, apples, nuts, chocolate, fruit punch, etc etc.
My progress will go down the hill but hey! I have the flu and I'll say I'm hibernating

Drink LOTS of water before you eat. This will make you feel fuller and eat smaller portions.

Helena,
You asked what's cooking. Our traditional Christmas Eve meal is Shepherd's Pie.

I steam cubed potatoes for 20 minutes to make the mashed potatoes.
I cook the onions in worchestershire sauce and vegetable stock in my grandmother's old iron skillet, circa 1905. I add peas, carrots and corn to the top and cover them. I steam them for about 15 minutes or until hot. I add the mashed potatoes to the top in chunks and only lightly press them down if necessary.
Then I bake it in the oven at 400 degrees for 40 minutes.
It's a little time consuming, but it's worth it.

Use a smaller plate ( I know this is a bit late). If you use a smaller plate you eat less but still feel like you can "heap" your plate.
