Hi Community!
Does anyone have any tips on foods to cook while camping? I recently went on two camping trips - Big Sur and Mendocino - and cooked dinner over the campfire on both! In Big Sur, we cut up red bell pepper, sweet white onion and sausage, and cooked them all over the grill. We also made campfire popcorn by heating a pan with oil over the fire, then putting popcorn kernels in it! (We might've added some sea salt and marshmallows to make it more like kettle corn )
In Mendocino, we attempted to make homemade pizza over the campfire. Now let me just say that making homemade pizza is not the easiest thing even when you're making it at home in a kitchen, with all the tools you need. We got crafty and used a wine bottle as our rolling pin for the dough, and topped it with herbed butter, and sausage/mushrooms cooked over the fire.
The best thing we made though? Campfire baked brie with strawberry-rhubarb preserves on top. We placed the brie on a piece of foil, set it on the grill of the campfire, and let it melt!
Does anyone have any go-to recipes for camping trips? Our "campfire kettle corn" is below!

Frankly speaking, a travel is impossible for me without potatoes in foil and grilled meat. Some years ago we ordered a gas grill on https://www.thewindupspace.com/best-gas-grills-under-300/. Indeed, it is a perfect thing for travelling and also for using it in your yard. It is portable and easy to refuel. You have no need to take care of fire and cooking, because the temperature is distributed evenly and food doesn't burn on the grill. We have a truck, and such things are necessary for us when we, as a family, are travelling for several days. To eat canned and junk food is not our choice.

Hi @LeachCuck, thank for sharing that idea with us.
That gas grill looks really useful for camping and traveling as it allow you to cook different food and you don't have to eat junk food 😀

Hey that is an amazing popcorn photo!! Sooo, back in time when we just started our camp trips, we had no idea about how to do it properly (and also not so much outdoor equipment). We were just buying things that do not need a fridge 😄 so basically some chips and sandwiches. I do not even have to tell you the stomach ache after each trip 😄 then we went on youtube, watched a tone of camping videos and bought a gas heater for water. And this was the best purchase! So now, we take that gas heater and can boil water which we use to mix special food for camping. You will find in supermarkets a lot of prepared food for camping. You just pull there how water and VOILA!! pasta with mushroom sauce. Amazing or?

While reading your post, I really wanted to eat, haha. I go camping with my family once every two weeks, but we have never cooked such complex dishes. The maximum that we made of something complicated was Mexican soup, which we cooked for a long time, which turned out to be very tasty, but it took too much time. Before camping, I buy myself some dry rations, and I cook baked meat for my wife and children on a campfire. Usually, this is enough. By the way, I recently read an article on this site about different types of tents -- https://midwestcamping.org/index.php/2021/10/14/8-types-of-tents-camping/. I was surprised by how comfortable and practical tents are. I think I will soon get myself new types of tents that I like.

We used to make potato packets. We would peel and slice potatoes. Then layer the potatoes with some chopped onion and cheese. Use the really heavy duty tin foil and cook over campfire or on grill.
