Food Log Potluck

Hey All,

So 'tis the season for Potlucks and family gathreings.
I have no idea what I ate last night, or how much, or how many calories. All I can say is that it was probably more than I should have.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to log this kind of random meal?
I was thinking of averaging out past dinners and then adding 20% to the meal, Is there a better way?

This is exactly why I don't log my food. I make up all my own recipes and cook from scratch when I can and I find it way too difficult to figure out what the calories are. So I would just skip recording the potluck all together and call it a day. But that's just me. 🙂

Okay first of all, the logging system on fitbit is not very good. Like at all. So it really doesn't matter what you put into it, it's probably not going to be all that accurate.

For me, I've been counting calories since I was fifteen and I know what food portions look like, and I'm pretty good at guessing about how many calories are in something that I eat. Unless it has a really high sugar content, that'll usually throw me off a bit.

What I'll usually do is just plug in exactly what I ate into the logger. If the thing that I ate doesn't show up in the dropdown menu, I'll just type something similar into the box and then select an option that has approximately the amount of calories that I think I ate. I realize this advice is probably not helpful for you now, but if you ever get to the point where you can mentally visualize 3/4 of a cup of skim milk, it might.

Tl;dr: Honestly, just calculate your calories on some other site, like calorieking or myfitnesspal first. For spontaneous meals that are homemade, try and find a store bought equivalent, and guess at your portion size. Always overestimate if you're trying to lose weight and underestimate if you're trying to gain. It'll give you some wiggle room to work with if it wasn't your last meal of the day.

I agree with too_spicy but I haven't been doing it as long.  I have been logging for about three months but I know roughly what I ate and work from there.  If you had a salad at a potluck with a creamy dressing and bacon, log a plain garden salad, a portion of dressing and a slice of bacon - that sort of thing.  I have some custom meals made in the app that are a good starting point like "side salad" and "mix of vegetables".  I use them when I make stirfy's, salads, etc so I don't have to enter each thing each time.  Sometimes I massage the quantities after I've entered.  The only issue with finding store bought equivalents is they are likely higher in sodium and even possibly carbs than if you made it yourself but if you aren't mircromanaging your macronutrients that should be ok.
