I have a ham butt and a head of cabbage. I remember a large pot filled with water. I cut up the cabbage in chunks [removed the core] and cooked it in the water. I remember cooking the ham along with the cabbage. Problem: I don't remember if the ham butt went in before of after the cababge. Just a man, here! Help!

@Gjoe Forgive me, but your "Just a man, here!" tickled me. You're a man who is cooking! That is a wonderous thing.
When I fix corned beef and cabbage, I usually give the beef a bit time in the pot before putting in the cabbage. One reason that I do this is that the cabbage cooks up faster than the meat.
I'd suggest you cook the ham for maybe thirty minutes before you pop the cabbage in. Be sure to skim off the stuff that bubbles to the surface. If you have any, some onions add a nice touch.
And if it's anything like corned beef and cabbage, that broth is good to sop up some crusty bread!
Now I'm hungry!

I saw your onions and raised you sliced carrots and sliced mushrooms. [Nixed the crusty bread ONLY because I didn't have any...had 1 slice whole grain country oat bread from Arnold's. The bread was 160 mg of NaCl. Ham was 870 mg per 3 oz. Well, I guess you could put me down for 1740 mg because I ate 2 of MY slices. Just HOW are we supposed to eat healthy, I ask you!] Hey, they were just sitting in the refrigerator! And, more importantly...I looked at the ham butt package and DIALED the company! See what a MAN can do when his back is to the wall? So, I followed HER instructions and had a very tasty dinner last night. I forgot the same thing as the last time I had made it...quite a while ago: i took the outer wrapping off but DIDN'T take the next skin covering off the butt. I did NOT see or taste any difference. Mom would be proud of me. However, meat was to be at 120 degrees; mine was 180 degrees when I shut down the process at the anointed hour. Hey, you say 2 to 3 hours. I stopped at 2 and a half hours. I follow orders!!

Your mom would be proud indeed! She raised you well. You probably had leftoevers, too.
As for eating healthy, I'm sure ham and cabbage isn't a daily meal for you, but a treat to be savored. A special meal after watching our sodium and caloric intake, makes us appreciate it more.
SInce you've conquered this, what's next on the menu?

H&C non-conquering event. Made it twice before. once under the tutelage eye of mom; then on my own. Remember, I just had a momentary brain fart. Over that now. And, can I dial Customer Support! Leftovers? U betcha. either tonight's or tomorrow's dinner. In the past I have made lasagna (meatless); baked pork chops; poached salmon (nuked); baked cod and blue fish; baked chicken (Hellman's recipe!); escarole soup; my FAVORITE - Lipton [can u handle the NaCl?] chicken noodle soup; baked duncan hines cakes; made pumpkin bread (Trader Joe's box). C? Man CAN do. And, thank a teacher if you can read. worked in IT for over 30 years...so, i can do recipes. we needed to make a 'recipe' (a plan to the company) everytime we installed new operating systems; maintenanced same...u hadda get down & get back up in less than 5 hours...mostly on time change dates. And, it better STAY up. So, from ALL that pressure...I began to realize I could cook...pasta box has a recipe on the back? I save it and DO it...soup or a bake. But, I get religious in times of trouble - i look for a woman! They Rule the entire home front. I love sister-in-laws' soup 'recipe' - what's left in the fridge? throw it in! As you see...the carrots & mushrooms were languishing in my fridge...dieing to jump into any hot pot. I help make wishes come true. BTW i a gazillion recipes. mom's plus all that i took off Every Day Foods and Taste of Home. Having needed ingredients when you want to eat...now THAT's an intriguing event.
