Here are the rules I live by (if you have seen my other posts then you know i'm Paleo, even if you arent you can take the same rules and adjust them to your way of living)

I agree with what a lot of folks have said - just keep the premade store bought sweets out of your house, refined sugar is horrible for you, it spikes your blood sugar and makes your leptin hormone in your body not work correctly which means you wont lose weight - just dont eat it. period. (i also use this theory when talking about any simple carb or grain/bread - they all will be converted to sugar and will effect you the same way). My rules to live by:

1. eat natural, home made, and healthy treats

2. limit yourself - if you are working out regularly then maybe a small sweet on a day you are planning a big work out - your body will burn it off and use it as energy. most Paleo folks say limit treats to 1x every month or two - typically for me its 1x every week or so 🙂

3. do not pollute your body with toxins and chemicals - you are much better off eating a baked banana with a tbsp of raw honey than you would be eating something with sweet and low, or splenda - these things are not natural and have chemicals in them that can actually do horrible damage to your body, dont compromise your health to cut calories. dont believe me? you can read countless articles from health and nutrition experts that confirm what i am saying.

if you want some recipes i have a thread called: Paleo Recipes that i just made today, i'll post many sweet treat recipes i use there. also you can just search for vegan or paleo desserts, there are a ton out there, they ar healthy but they feel naughty 🙂 just shoot me a message if you like what im saying and want some more recipes, i'm always happy to share!

I love to bake which I find helps with controlling my sweet tooth in some ways. If I am really craving something just super sweet and not at all good for me I go ahead and find a really fun and complex recipe, usually for me this is a cupcake with a filling, frosting and decoration all homemade. I find that when I spend a long time working on something I am really proud of what I’ve made and more likely to share with friends and then with the goodies that are left at home I’m not nearly as tempted to eat them, I want to make them last a while and that my family gets to enjoy them since I know I won’t make them again for a while. Which means that while I make two dozen or so cupcakes I only eat about 3 of them over the course of a week while my family and friends devour the rest. I’ve made delicious cupcakes that I loved but only ended up eating one of because my family got to them first. I also bake some slightly healthier versions of my favorite goodies, I have a whole wheat snicker doodle recipe that I love because they are more filling then regular cookies so I feel much more satisfied after one small cookie than even two or three regular cookies.

When it come to sweets and desserts, really anything not on your health regimine DONT DENY YOURSELF! If your craving something... HAVE IT! I say this because eventually that craving is going to really take over. But make sure that you do enough to work thatcheat off. PORTIONS! Have your cheat but only a small amount. Satisfy your craving but be able to not feel guilty because you can burn it off.

Usually, I find that if I keep my blood sugar stable, I don't crave sweets much at all.

I do have dark chocolate almost every day (just a little) and I make myself cocoa and hot carob drinks with stevia. Stevia doesn't raise blood sugar so it can help you through a sugar craving.
