Your Favorite Food....Made Healthy!

I've found throughout my jorney to Paleo, you don't have to give up your favorite foods...at all. Sure, you might have to alter the way it is made, but that doesn't mean it is gone forever.

For instance, one of my absolute favorite foods is pancakes/waffles. They're heaven.

Instead of making them from the box, which lets face it....is super freaking easy, I make my own (and really it only takes about 10 extra minutes.

What is something you absolutely LOVE and don't want to give up...that you've found a much healthier way of making?

ditto on the pancakes and waffles.  we've got a version that uses almond flour and another that uses coconut flour.

also, since i have no problems with dairy, i love this pizza "crust".  it's the absolute closest to the real thing i've found:

oddly, before moving to paleo, i was a HUGE lover of sandwiches.  i assumed i would go nuts not being able to eat bread anymore.  however, the thing that helped was ordering a sandwich and then just eating the inside.  you quickly come to realize that the bread is just one big filler item and the insides (the good stuff) is pretty skimpy.  the mindset became, "did i really just pay $8 for a few slices of mediocre quality meat and some veggies?".

so, since moving to paleo, i haven't really needed to find a substitute for bread.  i'm quite happy to just make a big **ahem** salad and call it good.

I have not changed my recipes as much as I'd thought I would; however, I've been portioning them Cat Happy I'm not missing anything!

Also, go overboard with veggies! I ended up having a new comfort food that is super low on calories, it's a swiss chard stew.

In a pot, add 2 teaspoons of olive oil, about 4 chopped tomatoes and a diced onion. Let them caramelize. Throw in about 2 cups of water and half a cube of stock, throw in some chopped sausages (any kind is fine) and let them soak up the broth. When it gets a really chunky/soupy consistency, throw in about 2 bunches of roughly chopped swiss chard and remove from heat.  Serve with rice and a lemon wedge. YUM!

@carl669 I was the exact same. Bread was just the best thing on the planet...until I realized it wasn't. I'm big on replacing bread with romaine lettuce (something about it being hard and crunchy makes for a good substitution).

I replace some of the butter in baked goods with applesauce (sugar free) or avocado.  It makes them moist and favorful.  Doesn't make them health food but it does lighten them up a bit.
