http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/2012/03/hummus-in-the-blender.html and the variations from it are a basic way of making hummus - I use a similor deal for making mine (I buy dry chickpeas as I don't like how the hummus turns out when it comes from canned chickpeas).

thanks for the Link Nyxks.  I'm going to try a few of these.  I have discovered how good hummus is in taste and healthiness.

Its def more healthy when you make it yourself since you know what goes into it vs store gotten stuff that is mass produced (though some greek mom and pop shops you can get some good stuff that is still home made)

@scoobie57  @Nyxks and all -

Did you know that May 13th is National Hummus Day?  Neither did I, until this week.  The Community Team had a lively discussion about hummus over lunch on Wednesday.  Regardless, I just thought I'd pop in and share my enthusiasm for hummus.  I don't think I've ever used a recipe for amounts (just keep tasting it until it's delicious) but I usually use the following ingredients in various amounts:

- Garbanzo beans (I always forget to soak them, so I use mostly canned - I always reserve some of the liquid to be added to the mixture if it's not smooth enough)

- Tahini

- Olive oil

- Lemon juice

- Minced garlic, or garlic paste

- Salt

- Minced pickled habanero pepper

- Jarred artichoke hearts

Yum!  Keep the hummus recipes coming...I can't wait to try these at home!

I place a tin of chickpeas (drained) in a blender with salt, lemon juice, and a small amount of oil, then throw in whichever herbs and spices I feel like!

My favourite ingretients to add -

  • Moroccan spices with raisins
  • Sun dried tomatoes and basil
  • Garlic and fresh corriander

Then serve on slices of cumcumber or pitta bread

Mr and I use different herbs and other ingredients to change up our humuus.

One goodie is adding a few chopped smoked oysters. Adds a surpising and different level of complexity.  Little goes a long way.

Also like adding cilantro and cumin.

I like my hummus chunky. I use less oil and if I want to thin it, I add a little liquid from the can. We also soak our own chickpeas but I confess sometimes I want the convenience of the canned ones.

I didn't notice this hummus thread before Emily mentioned it. It's my new favorite snack. I get the pre-made, but so far, it's been delicious.

I'll offer up my hummus recipe, so that we can collectively start getting excited about National Hummus Day!

Dump the following in a food processor:

1 can of chickpeas (pinch off the skins if you have the time - makes it creamier)

2 Tbsp lemon juice

2 Tbsp tahini sauce

1 Tbsp olive oil

2 tsp garlic powder

1 tsp cumin

1 tsp cayenne

1/2 tsp salt

(optional) 1 roasted red pepper

Give it a few long pulses in the processor, scrape down the sides and hit it a few more times.

Devour voraciously with your favorite chips, or spread on a sandwich.

@MatthewFitbitis telling us to "Devour voraciously" and it's not yet National Hummus Day!

I've never made my own and don't have a food processor - can it be done without one?

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmus is yummmmmmmmmmm!

@Odyssey13 It's probably a little too thick for a blender -but you could thin it out by adding more oil if that's all you've got.

It's not too big of a batch - my small (cheapo) food processor handles the job pretty well.

i think mine out by adding a little juice from the pickled jalapenos... saves on calories n fat 🙂  (n i love a good jalapeno hummus)

This is a couple of days late, but the Fitbit Community Team had a fabulous time celebrating Hummus Day at the office on Tuesday, May 13th!  We circulated an email to involve the members of our department and got some great participation.

From the top left on down the line of hummus samples:

1. Creamy lemon hummus crafted by @Kelly

2. Roasted eggplant hummus made by @zapleahy

3. @MatthewFitbit 's contribution, roasted red pepper hummus (he mentioned to me that he threw this together on Tuesday morning! He thought it would be too spicy, but it wasn't.)

4. Edamame hummus, brought by Annie

5. My own contribution, habañero hummus - used my blend stick since I don't have a food processor, but it definitely does the job!

6. Jalapeño hummus, contributed by Kate.

@AmritaFitbit @RickyFitbit  @EmersonFitbit and @GraceFitbit all brought cheese or items for hummus dipping - thanks for the crackers and chips, guys!  Although @EmersonFitbit, you promised us homemade salsa, did you not? There will be a next time, so I won't forget.

The avocado pictured was grown in the backyard of another of our colleagues - I'm so jealous of her avocado tree!

Would anyone care to share their recipe with the Fitbit Community? @Odyssey13 - thanks for celebrating the festive occasion with us 😉

Nothing really to do with hummus, but more of those avos I brought.

Here is a paleo chocolate recipe made from avocados.

CHOCOLATE AVOCADO PUDDING (PALEO, VEGAN)

INGREDIENTS
  • 1 medium avocado, ripe
  • 2 Tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 Tablespoons honey for Paleo diet OR 2 Tablespoons agave nectar for vegans
  • 6 Tablespoons almond milk
  • optional: pistachios or other nut for topping

METHOD
  1. Cut open the avocado and scoop out the pit. Cut it into large chunks and put in the blender.
  2. Add the cocoa, honey or agave, and almond milk. Blend, starting on low and then moving to high speed until it is smooth.
  3. If the avocado is larger, you will need a bit more of each ingredient. If it is too thick, drizzle in a bit more almond milk. Add more cocoa or honey or agave to taste.
  4. Refrigerate the pudding and serve cold. Top with pistachios or other nuts. Enjoy!
Thanks!

Omigosh @JessicaJM -

I just realized that I have ALL but one of those ingredients at home.  This excitement...I can hardly contain it!  I know what I'm whipping up when I get home.  Is vanilla almond milk alright, or is it better if it's regular?

Thanks so much for sharing!
