Best Practices for Using Fitbit in Different Scenarios

Hello everyone,

I am looking to start a discussion on the correct use of Fitbit in various scenarios to gain clarity on how to best utilize the device. Here is my situation:

For the past 5-8 years, I have been using a Fitbit-inspired device clipped to my belt daily, as I am not allowed to wear a watch at work. This setup has worked well for me. When I get home, I take my daily walk, during which I start the app in exercise mode and turn it off afterward. I usually keep the Fitbit device clipped to my belt, which has not caused any issues until about a year ago.

The goal of this discussion is to find out how I can best use my Fitbit correctly. Is it wrong to have my device with me on my walk? I have noticed that it does not measure correctly without it. Over the past year, I have experienced several challenges with double step counts, incorrect GPS measurements, and inaccurate step counts (based on my knowledge of the same routes over 5-8 years). I have a pretty good idea of the route and the number of steps.

Extra question: If I am allowed to have my phone with me, will that count steps as well as the device, or is that calculated differently? I am only looking for as close to reality and not scientifically correct data 🙂

What would be the correct setup for my use case?

Thank you for your insights!
