Calories Burned Correct?

Today, I've walked 7,670. I looked it up and that should be only about 300 to 400 calories. No work outs today. However, over today, it claims that I have burned 3,400. Is this accurate? Im 244 pounds, 5'8" male with an inspire 3. Im trying to keep track with the lose it app and want to ensure it is accurately tracking calories because I don't believe it should be that high, as my base daily burn with doing nothing Is around 1900 to 2100 calories.

Hi, @Maxturbo101, welcome to the community. You do not mention where you "Looked up" the 300/400 calorie estimate. You may find this article of interest How does my Fitbit device calculate my daily activity? - Fitbit Help Center I compare my calorie burn with two devices/systems, and I find the Fitbit combination consistently indicates a lower calorie burn for my daily swim. That said, when I weigh myself (daily), I find it's a more accurate predictor of weight loss/gain. You should always bear in mind that calorie burn always needs to be compared with calorie intake if it's to be meaningful.

I hope this helps.

Cheers

Thanks for the reply!

I looked up the "calories burned" on multiple websites just to confirm, for both my base calories burned as well as just steps calories burned.

I keep track of my calorie intake and usually go for 2,000 or less, but seeing 3,400 burned daily makes me think I am severely under my calorie intake, which I believe can be dangerous, so thats why I want to make sure.

Right now, im only walking 3 days a week of actual walking (we have a mile track at work that I use) but I just don't understand where the calories burned are coming from if im just going casual steps at work and them adding up to 3,400 calories daily.

Hi, @Maxturbo101, thanks for your feedback. May I suggest you review the comments in my link about BMR? BMR are the calories you burn by just breathing, your heart beating and other basic functions.. FYG, I have a BMR rate of about 2,300 calories per day (I'm lighter than you at 71.5 Kg). To this, the app adds my exercise burn, at present I swim 3750 metres in two hours & burn between 750 & 950 calories. In addition, I walk a little, but as I do not particularly exert myself, the burn rarely registers. In broad brush terms, I eat 3,000 to 3300 calories a day and maintain my weight. I weigh myself daily and carefully monitor what I eat to the extent that I use digital kitchen scales to weigh food. I'm successful at reducing or occasionally increasing my weight by changing how much I eat & drink. While exercise is great for feeling good (I can recommend swimming), to change our weight we must focus on what we consume.

I hope this is helpful.

Cheers

I have been doing well checking my calorie intake with measurements and such, with everything im eating and drinking. Again, being at or below about 2,000 calories.

I don't swim or do any big exercises, just walking at work or the bigger, continuous walks at work the few days.

I don't see where I can find my BMR on the fitbit app, but would love to see what it is. Still, for me not to do anything yesterday except walk and get 3,400 calories burned but me only eating 2,000 worries me if I can't calculate it correctly. I don't want to increase my calorie intake id the 3,400 calories burned is incorrect.

Hi, @Maxturbo101 When you wake in the morning, before you record eating anything, sync your Fitbit app then look in the Today screen food tile, it will tell you that you are xxxx below target. XXXX is your BMR. It's calculated using your age, weight & gender.

Just a quick addition: From what I could tell, it said 0 cals in 1400 calories out, but with the BMR thing it said something like 2400 esitmate from what I remember seeing. If that's my base, and I get home to 3400 burned without doing any actual excersise and just walking at work, does that mean I've burned 1,000 calories somewhere during the day with walking from desk to desk a bit?

Hi, @Maxturbo101, I assume you wear your Inspire 3 throughout your day (and night) unless charging. Calorie burn depends on how active you are during the day; you do not have to be recording an exercise or purposefully doing something. How far do you walk at work? Do you climb stairs at work? Do you walk or cycle to work? All these activities contribute to your daily calorie burn. I burn nearly 1000 calories in two hard hours; I'm retired and do not work. You have all day at work!! I can only add that I also use other devices, and my calorie burn on both is quite close.

I do wear it day and night (other than charging as well as my shower). I drive to work but have to walk to my building, which is maybe about 300 steps up to it? I think I maybe walk around 2,000 to 2,500 steps based off my previous watch (It was one called like Itouch or something). My fitbit claims I walk a lot more than I do, but I have not found out if it's accuretly reading my steps correctly. I have to walk up and down my apartment complex to leave and get to it once I'm home. I don't do too much at work, and that's what worries me when it says I've done a lot of steps but also burned a lot of calories. I just want to make sure it's accurate, or at least accurate enough, to help me adjust and keep track.

For context, I did a walk at work that was a mile and a half, roughly 3,000 some steps, and it said I burned 320 calories or so. But that's consistent walking, not just getting up from my desk to greet someone and sitting back down.

Hi, @Maxturbo101, thanks for your further feedback. I've considered the details of your day & step counts, you will have noted from the earlier link I sent you that -

Fitbit devices use a 3-axis accelerometer to count your steps. This sensor also allows your device to determine the frequency, duration, intensity, and patterns of your movement.

In the past, there have been many reports of step count discrepancies. Investigation usually points to two scenarios.

  • Too many steps caused by repeated arm movements while typing, driving or some other vigorous activity.
  • No steps counted caused by a lack of arm movement when walking with a buggy, walking stick or shopping.

This article provides some detail, its not only Fitbit devices that face this challenge.

If you visit the steps tile in the "Today" screen of the fitbit app on the date you noted excessive steps, look at the time the steps are recorded and try to remember what you were doing. If you work at a desk, are you typing?

You can edit out excessive steps How to add, edit, or delete Fitbit data & activities - Android - Fitbit Help Center explains the process.

I hope this helps. Please let us know how you get on

Cheers
