I believe I had a fitbit 5 previously, then it got the white screen of death and I picked up an inspire 3 a few days ago. I immediately noticed some things were off and it would often show numbers low to high, but by using finger to measure and a blood pressure machine too, my pulse would come back much lower. Anyone experience something similar? and are the later versions known to be more accurate?

I really appreciate your message and your information shared about your Inspire 3, and will be glad to share with you information about heart rate readings and accuracy. 
Could you please take a look into the following article (it explains how to get better readings with your device) : How do I improve the accuracy of a heart-rate reading?
I also advise you to read this thread, where a user shares her experience with an Inspire 2. Fitbit Literally Saved My Life
